Ranking the All Time Test teams

Snow is my hit the deck enforcer. Lacking a shock bowler of that kind without him. Barnes was likely a spinner imo. In Asia, Hedders or Jim come in.

Fair enough. Snow is most likely England’s best quick since Trueman. But,who do you open the attack with and why?
That is hard when it comes to the big five teams in this. You'd think Anderson and Trueman because they're swing bowlers and Snow is less dependent on movement but John does have a tantalising record against the top order.

I would feel more comfortable dropping Anderson than Snow. Statham and Bedser were likely similar level bowlers to Anderson with relatively similar strengths. Anderson had the best career of the three because of his freak longevity and a more diverse range of conditions covered (obviously not Brian and Alec's fault the second part).

John Snow though is the greatest ever English out and out hit the deck bowler. His record on hard flat Caribbean and Australian pitches are green flags. Percentage of top wickets another green flag. Rolls Royce cricketer and the point of difference.

I am not comfortable with that English or Caribbean batting line up but am sure the picked players would fare better than other regulation picks.

I wish to pick Mankad or Jadeja in place of VVS but neither Mankad nor Jaddu are suited for an ATG No.6.

SL and New Zealand also an interesting matchup, basically pace vs spin on bowlers - SL has the better batters overall
No, they don't. Apart from Sanga, NZ batters are better and our openers are MUCH better. Atapattu, Jayasuriya, and Karunaratne are only about Latham level with the bat and we have 6 openers better than that.

Don't see the value in playing Gibbs over Garner when Sobers can bowl spin. If it was an ordinary pace attack elsewhere there would be more of an argument.

Edit: Can't believe I'd left out Sobers & Marshall. It was too late in India, I guess.
All of these are great choices; but I would certainly make certain changes in every team.
As for Australia; I would still prefer to have Trumper over Simpson or Lawry; his average is not impressive but reputation certainly is. Also, Smith over Border and Lindwall over Davidson; but those are close.
For Windies, if going with an opener who didn't opened later on career, I would go Rohan Kanhai over Worrell; and as keeper Walcott over Dujon. When he kept, he was a very decent keeper and as batsman he certainly is superior. Also, Gibbs for Garner. This ones close, but I think team needs a proper spinner (Sobers was everything) and Gibbs probably was better than most people give him credit for.
In South Africa, make de Villiers keep. He kept on 24 matches and was a quite good keeper. They have many good Allrounders, I would add a bunch; as Rice, Procter and Faulkner will replace Nourse, Lindsay and Tayfield.
In England, Sutcliffe over Barrington; make Hobbs and him open while Hutton bats at 3. Ames for Knott as better batter, Rhodes for Laker as an extra bat and Anderson, Larwood or Bedser for Snow.
In India, Kumble for Zaheer Khan and Mankad for Laxman as the batting depth is sufficient. Dhoni can bat at 6.
In Pakistan, Moin Khan for Sarfaraz, Sarfaraz Nawaz for Shoaib Akhtar, Abdul Qadir for Saqlain Mushtaq.
In New Zealand, Bert Sutcliffe for Devon Conway, John Richard Reid for Cairns, Bond for Cowie and Boult for Wegner.
In Sri Lanka, make Sanga keep, Mahadevan Sathasivam for Mathews and Ashantha De Mel for Chandimal.
