Possibilities of Shane Warne playing to 40

Thing is will the selectors keep picking him even if his ability slides?

I mean, no offence but to say he will keep on playing til 45 in top-class test cricket is just dreaming and all it will do is just drag down his averages and performances like it did with beefy in his later years.
Has he ever been better than this year? He was one dropped catch away from virtually single-handedly retaining the ashes for Australia.
His action is not the kind that should suffer as he gets older but even allowing a drop in performances he would still be a great player.

Of course would he want to play as a poorer player. probably not. He likes attention but he can probably find that away from the cricket field, which he will have to anyway at some point.

I would expect him to retire but not before the next ashes in England. A farewell tour, unbeatable records, playing at 40, enormous attention, sounds like something he would enjoy. He probably also sees England as something of a "market" for whatever he wants to do after playing.

It happened two years ago for Stewie, and John Traicos played for Zimbabwe at the age of 45 as well.

Then, of course, there's this incredible man, who played in the 1994 ICC Trophy at the age of 81, a full sixty-four years after his First Class début!
And he bowled his 10 overs for 28 runs when the opposition scored at five an over in its fifty overs !! All in his 82nd year !!

WOW !!!

Clarie Grimmet made his debut at 33 and went on to get 200 wickets!

Warne is bowling superb right now and it is a possibility that he can go on till 40 despite the modern cricket being much more than past. Walsh went on till very late.

If Warne does go on till 40 it will be very difficult for Murali to hold the record once both of them have finished considering Australia play much more tests..
Murali's bowling rate, even with less matches, will probably see him bowling more than Warne will have had.

I hope he privileges us for many years to come. An artist with the ball, a true competitor with a will to find a way in any situation. I'd think I'd cry the day he announces his retirement.

That is another factor, Aussies unlikely to find another bowler of even slightly lesser capability for a very very long time, so its in Aussie interests to keep playing him as long as possible.

Murali already IMO looks likely to start dropping off and with newcomers like Bandara, Weerakoon showing promise I will not be wrong in saying Murali's end has begun already . :)

Because I had nothing else to do and wanted to see my name on Cricinfo, I entered a question on this to Ask Steven. The email I received in reply:

'Hmm, possibly some mistake, will investigate!
