Just based on eye test. Lara, as silly as it sounds, never got near fulfilling his potential as an ODI batsman. His ODI batting post 1997 was genuinely heart breaking to see as a fan, he fell from being the #1 in the world to a inconsistent top class matchwinner who would barely make it to the top 5 ODI batsmen of that time.

People who don't know would look at stats and WC performances and probably say Ponting easily coasts this. But up until the late 90s or so, Lara was well in the discussion for best ODI batsman ever and up there even with SRT.

Whatever shortcoming he had vs the Ws and Donald on tests, he made up for in ODis. He once had a sequence vs the Ws and Donald where he scored: 128, 111*, 26*, 49, 114, 95*. Then dominated a world series tournament in the mid 90s again facing the Ws and McWarne. For me, Lara over Ponting because at his best, he took apart every great bowler he faced.

Statistically Lara is better.
Gap widens when you consider Lara played for weak West Indies and outside his strong zone (top order ) and Ponting played in an easier era for an alltime 11.
