Top order Lara = Kohli
Overall stats era adjusted Lara > Ponting

At number 3
Ponting 42 at 81
Lara 46 at 86
Imagine Lara playing in Australian team in easier 00s.

Rare poll where I vote in favour of Ponting. He often gets pitted against slightly better cricketers.

Whatever it takes!!!
How? Their averages are similar plus ponting played in a more batting friendly era.
Just based on eye test. Lara, as silly as it sounds, never got near fulfilling his potential as an ODI batsman. His ODI batting post 1997 was genuinely heart breaking to see as a fan, he fell from being the #1 in the world to a inconsistent top class matchwinner who would barely make it to the top 5 ODI batsmen of that time.

People who don't know would look at stats and WC performances and probably say Ponting easily coasts this. But up until the late 90s or so, Lara was well in the discussion for best ODI batsman ever and up there even with SRT.

Whatever shortcoming he had vs the Ws and Donald on tests, he made up for in ODis. He once had a sequence vs the Ws and Donald where he scored: 128, 111*, 26*, 49, 114, 95*. Then dominated a world series tournament in the mid 90s again facing the Ws and McWarne. For me, Lara over Ponting because at his best, he took apart every great bowler he faced.

Most batsmen would like to have that fall

Some chip on your shoulder here AA this is the second thread in a day you've started asking a hypothetical re. Ponting, clearly looking for (and then arguing directly for) a negative response

Statistically Lara is better.
Gap widens when you consider Lara played for weak West Indies and outside his strong zone (top order ) and Ponting played in an easier era for an alltime 11.

Ponting was very ordinary for first 5-6 years

However one can argue Ponting faced better bowling attack than Lara for most of his career in ODI.90s NZ and Eng bowling attack were weak compare to 2000s.Ind and SL bowling also improved during 2000s.Pak had better bowlers in 90s.Ponting also faced more SA than Lara and SA had top tier bowling attack.Off course when Aus and WI played Lara would face strong Aus bowlers and Ponting will face weak WI bowlers.

Averages aren't everything, particularly Australian batting averages. Most Australian ODI batsmen have better away/ neutral averages than home averages due to larger grounds (the biggest case of this is Andrew Symonds who averaged around 30 at home and 50 away).

Lara was better than Ponting in the 90s. Pointing was better than Lara in the 00s. Not too much to separate them purely as batsmen, but Ponting was the complete package - one of the best fielders of all time and a very good ODI captain. He also lifted for the big moments. So Ponting wins it for me.

Ponting spent the majority of his career batting at 3, where he averaged 42.

Lara spent the first decade of his career batting 1 to 3, where he averaged 45.9.

Afterwards Lara went down the order, floating from 4 to 7, his board's reasoning being that other players needed an opportunity to garner experience. During this second phase Lara mostly failed from aroundabout 2003 onwards.

At the number 4 position he failed in particular in his role as team shepherd. While in the early phase of his career he averaged in the high 50s in this position over some years, these were all before 2003ish. From 2003ish, the typical Lara ODI innings involved him slogging 30ish runs and getting out trying to up the run rate (while Chanderpaul relaxed at the other end). Sort of like a constantly thwarted version of Dhoni.
