If Hutton did the same, I would say he's picking the fight too by the way, no point mentioning him.

1. I don't particularly care how it is remembered in India, Being given a bad decision is no reason to almost forfeit a test match, If it were almost every Test match in New Zealand, Asia and West Indies should have been threatened by forfeit before neutral umpiring. Also, Sachin didn't react that way in 1999, neither did Imran in West Indies in 1988 (I think), so No, nobody had issues with Gavaskar before he decided to make issues with Australia for his personal reaction toward a bad decision.

2. No, you're welcome to explain though
Precisely no one did it before so it was effective. It was a one-off thing, which worked positively in the end.

I mentioned him because:
A) You mentioned 50s Ashes
B) He was a Great Opener, not too dissimilar as a player to Gavaskar himself

It wasn't because you like Hutton, I genuinely don't mind such a one off thing.

I believe that Imran Khan being an Asian cricketer was never fully given the recognition that matched his talent and achievements. He once spoke about facing open racism while playing in England in the 1970s.

At the time, the world admired the rise of African American athletes who shattered stereotypes through sheer brilliance. But Asian sportspersons were rarely seen in global arenas, and that absence shaped a perceptions. They lacked the physical presence or power to dominate. This is one reason the West Indies were so widely celebrated. Their cricketers were strong, fast and fearlessly dominant. They fit the image of sporting greatness the world understood and applauded.

By contrast, Asian cricketers brought a different kind of excellence; one rooted in patience, skill, and subtlety. Yet their achievements were often underappreciated. Fast bowling was glorified as the ultimate test of a cricketer while spin was viewed as something lesser. Pitches that favoured pace and bounce were described as sporting and fair while turning tracks were mocked as dustbowls, as if winning through spin and control was somehow less legitimate.

Players like Gavaskar and Imran were among the first truly world-class cricketers from Asia. They did not just compete, they belonged at the very top. Their bold, outspoken presence challenged the established order and disrupted long-held ideas about what an Asian cricketer was supposed to be. They brought not just skill, but pride and that was difficult to accept for some.

You may not, I don't either, I've been in my fair share of fights, it doesn't mean anything to me, Gavaskar had a bad reaction to something that was wrong, hell he didn't react far differently from how I would've. Wolverine said Australians and English had a problem with Gavaskar, I'm just informing they didn't, Gavaskar had a problem with the Australians, and that's fine, I like people having problems with the Australians but let's not rewrite history here.

I actually think the English kinda liked him, despite his record being relatively weakest there. Really goes to show pundits many a times rates on ceiling. Australians don't think particularly liked him, but he liked them even less so meh.

Gavaskar's comments on Shane Warne and David Hooke's death bordered on completely insensitive to borderline racist for the latter, They have no obligation to like him in today's time, if they do then that's quite shameful. Back then, I guess it was the Boycott syndrome.

Sunny has some kind hatred on english and aussie players but shamlessly licks ass of pakistani players. Imran once made raciast comment on indians in front of sunny but he was silent. If same was done was aussie or englishmen sunny would have been calling them racist

It's obviously about skin colour.

Don’t even think most Indians are really massive fans of him tbh.

It’s just his batting that most rate very high
Generation difference

Sunil Gavaskar belonged to a generation when Indian cricketers were not regarded as equals on the global stage.

Today, the BCCI is seen as a dominant force in world cricket with even foreign players often accommodating its interests and demands.

You might not believe but many post 2000 born indians hate bcci for being greedy ****ers they are

For an older generation that saw India sidelined in world cricket, the BCCI’s dominance today is a point of pride since it reflects how far the country has come.

For younger fans this power is often seen as arrogance. But for those who remember being ignored, having a seat at the head of the table matters.

Gavaskar is a racist rich old timer who can't help himself but belittle even great modern Indian Cricketers and directly mock them. No wonder he and Geoffrey are such good friends.
