Second ODI: Cricket Web XI v West Indies
at CW Oval

Scorecard
Ball By Ball

The Oval double-header began with the Webheads finally clicking after a number of lacklustre ODI performance in recent years, as once again only Sammy and Mohammed turned up; Ramdin played one shot throughout and got 18 with it, but the team had already been decapitated by Gough.

The man bowled an excellent opening spell. In the first over, Ganga edged twice down to vacant third man, picking up a four and a three, and with 21 for nought in the fourth over West Indies looked set. Then Ganga dragged the edge onto the stumps instead, Morton followed up by a vastly misjudged run, left alone by Gayle, and Chanderpaul was outdone by the classic fast bowler dismissal. Gayle took eleven off Watt's next over, only to see Samuels cramped up and gloving Gough to Stedman for his third wicket. Another eclectic fielding effort had Gayle run out, and at 41 for five the odds of a West Indian win had skyrocketed.

The remainder of the match was a formality. Ramdin blocked everything, ending with a strike rate in the region of forty, while Sammy and Mohammed at least managed to compile some kind of innings against Watt and the spinners. They scored 40 in their partnership and 77 between them, but Pickup had the last laugh as Mohammed was caught at slip, leaving West Indies all out for 156. The nerves which accompanied yesterday's chase were gone, and Cricket Web XI laughed their way home, an impromptu promotion of Chaulk to three yielding an unbeaten half-century after Markus had nicked Sammy behind.

West Indies 156 all out (43.2 overs)
D Mohammed 39; KJ Gough 3-43, NS Pickup 2-28

Cricket Web XI 157 for one (29 overs)
JE Stedman 69*, AP Chaulk 50*

Cricket Web XI won by nine wickets
Man of the Match: K. J. Gough (Cricket Web XI)

Third ODI: Cricket Web XI vs West Indies
at CW Oval

Scorecard
Ball By Ball

Another slow wicket, yet the match was anything but, even though it was low-scoring. The Webheads struggled out of the blocks batting and had to be saved by Neil Pickup, while Ramdin's grit at least made West Indies bat out fifty overs, though it did prevent them from converting a quick start into what should have been a match-winning total.

Smith and Gayle took a positive approach early on, buoyed by confident early strokes, and though Smith dragged Gough on the Black seamer was unable to repeat yesterday's top performance, ending with only the one wickets in his opening five-over spell. This mattered little, however, because both Gayle and Morton managed to hook Butler to Stedman. A bemused second-change bowler stood with two wickets for five, which turned three for 10 when Ganga left a seemingly innocuous delivery to crash into off.

Still, the West Indies had 104 runs in the bag by the end of the 20 overs, and would have pushed on but for Bravo's sharp edge to Chaulk. The spinners gradually got Ramdin under control, despite a couple of fine edges early on, and the final push at the death consisted of one over, where Chanderpaul bashed Camps for three fours in four balls. In his next over, he went for the big one, but failed to clear Watt at square leg; Sammy went shortly afterwards, and though Camps gave up a wide in the final over, but 220 did not look like an impossible chase.

West Indies had dropped Pedro Collins for this game, leaving Dwayne Bravo to share the new ball with Jermaine Lawson. An early breakthrough shook the Webheads, and when Sammy took out Markus and Cloete in successive overs, the Black tower of batsmen looked to have crumbled from the top.

Midway through the innings, the Webheads were 100 for three, with Sammy having taken two for 19 in another deadly accurate spell, and Chaulk needed to push back. That he did; straight back to Dwayne Smith, and the required run rate had gone above five. A quick incision was needed, and thankfully Butler had the presence of mind to provide it, as two flighted balls from Mohammed were brutally punished. Sammy got Crampton out, on the way to excellent figures of three for 24, but Camps looked to take over the role well enough.

With six overs remaining, the Webheads required 32, had five wickets in hand, and two settled batsmen. With Butler having just scored a four to relieve pressure, it looked like a simple task, but Lawson defeated the bat four times during the next over, and Butler was lucky to have a Bravo appeal turned down in the following. Four runs had come off 12 balls, and the equation suddenly became tricky. Butler in particular was to blame, as after his Mohammed slogs 17 runs came off 39 deliveries, and he looked ill at ease against the seamers. He did, however, manage to squeak out a couple of twos with quick running, but with 18 needed off 12 the dejected crowd began to ponder the possibility of defeat. So did Camps, and therefore did the only thing he could to avoid it; hook Lawson. Gayle held a simple catch at midwicket, and the equation became 18 off 10. Singles were taken by Halsey and Butler, but 15 was required off the last over, a miracle would be required to get anything out of the game.

However, with Dwayne Bravo bowling at the death, anything can happen. Bravo began the final over by tossing one far down the leg side. Ramdin dived, but the ball was too far even for him, and it had to be saved by fine leg. Three off the target. Furious with himself, Bravo overstepped the next ball, and another two off the total without a legal delivery being bowled. The next ball was short, wide, and driven for four by Butler, before one ball fell into the blockhole. Still, only seven required off four. Another short and wide ball followed, and Butler promptly drove it, but the ball fell ten yards short of the boundary into the hands of Morton.

Neil Pickup then strode out. The leg-spinner, famed for his batting capabilities throughout CWLand, got a good length ball first up, which he promptly edged for four more runs. The target had been halved; now two would tie and three would win. The penultimate ball was yet again short, and Pickup squeaked it down leg, where the wicketkeeper had to run to retrieve it; two to win. The final ball was, as often in two-runs-to-win situations, feebly fended away; Halsey was already six yards down the pitch, and despite a desperate throw and an appeal to the third umpire, Halsey was well inside and the tie, at least, was secured. The series lives on, as West Indies hunt a tie overall, too.

West Indies 220 for eight (50 overs)
S Chanderpaul 66; CR Butler 3-29, LA Camps 3-43

Cricket Web XI 220 for seven (50 overs)
CR Butler 64; DJG Sammy 3-24, JJC Lawson 2-47

Match tied.
Men of the Match: L. A. Camps (Cricket Web XI) and S. Chanderpaul (West Indies)
