That's not true, Symonds had an excellent series in the West Indies later that year, if anything he was better than ever. If you can assign his decline to a particular incident it was being dropped for the India tour after missing a "team meeting".

Regardless of the truth of it, Symonds perceived himself to be the victim of those circumstances and there is no doubt that it was part of his eventual slide. Quite tragic really to see a quality cricketer taken out of the game because of his inability to cope with events well. He certainly left a gigantic hole in the ODI side.
