I don't agree with Mulder's decision, but if I was to play devil's advocate I can see why he came to it. There is a lot of gatekeeping in Test cricket, he's still young and only a backup captain. If I was in his shoes I'd be feeling very nervous about the decision too.

Really though his coach should've encouraged him to go for it, not go for this "he's a legend, you're not" BS.

Yeah that part I definitely agree with. I hope he made the decision on his own and not because of what his coach said coz that was just rubbish.

Lara wasn't a wizened old pro when he broke Sobers' record - he was younger than Mulder is now. I find it an amazing decision for a sportsman who's reached that level - they aren't usually shrinking violets. What's the potential 'gatekeeping' stopping him? A few comments are nothing compared to etching your name in the sport's history.

Sober's 365 was also a young, inexperienced bat.

Lara's 400 is also not a record that should be deferred to in itself. If winning was the priority, time should have been called on that a couple of sessions earlier, and he should not have slowed down. Mulder batting longer was a good thing for RSA's chances (except maybe from the perspective of Mulder being fresh to bowl). If you bat out 11 sessions for a draw, you are scoring more than 620ish.

He wasn't just a sportsman, though. He was a first-time stand in captain, that brings its own unique pressures. I think we'll find out down the line that the coach put a lot of pressure on him to do what he did.
