Even though it was the downhillest of skiing, I think CdG finally getting some runs to go with his h4x bowling should earn him some sort of real run in the side. I think rolling with the 6-8 who played in this game (although possibly not in the same order) with the three main quicks makes sense moving forward.
If we do, it should be
6: Watling
7: CDG
8: Santner

... for matches at home only.

He's also one of the things you seem to like in a cricketer though - a military medium pacer who slams conventional wisdom by actually being effective as a Test bowler. Nuwan would be proud.
Not sure if anyone else heard the radio comms yesterday repeat a comment by Amla, describing Vernon Philander as 'South Africa's Colin De Grandhomme'.

haha, but rather than playing this role on the back of a successful FC career doing so, he is a rich man's part-timer being asked to play a totally unfamiliar role in test cricket- which is another thing I don't like :p

Haha I called CdG "Kiwi Philander" a few times on Facebook, but that's a glorious step beyond that. Amla WAG.

Perhaps his medium pace style was so under-rated that it even ensured he was underbowled at domestic level. :p

There's never been anything wrong with his average; he just hasn't always bowled heaps. I've suggested that perhaps he kept a good average by only being used when he was likely to be effective but that doesn't suit my point for this conversation so lets forget that for a minute.

Not Terrible
Has ''bits and pieces cricketer'' replaced ''allrounder'' recently? It seems all the rage lately.
It's called the Andrew Ellis Protocol, if you are not better than Andrew Ellis in either batting or bowling, then you are not a specialist. If you're not better than him in one form, then you're at best a part-timer or specialist.

Andrew Ellis is the line all players should be measured to for he is both not good enough and not bad enough to be considered a genuine batsman/bowler. CDG comes up short in the bowling

Cdg is a better bowler and a batsman than Santner though. Easily in the bowling.
