State Vice-Captain
Disappointed that Iyer also perished early. The boy has been on fire recently in Ranji. Hope he gets selected in T20 team atleast

International Debutant
I reckon so. Bavuma reserve bat. Piedt getting more time around the test group & Rabada chasing.

Elgar coming into his own. A really good head amongst the group as well. Always said it, our next test captain. Plays spin well, looks to attack it. If he gets in, he normally goes big.

Stiaan is all good on the eyes but want to see him get those singles in-between the boundaries. Big series for him but like Elgar they've been scoring hundreds regularly for 10 years now and been tested in all conditions and come out successful.

Vernon, may have dried up in the crazy wickets he was getting but he actually has been bowling quite well and if anything his batting results keeping going up. True all-rounder.

Big test for Harmer. I'm not sure how he will go to be honest. He does turn the ball and so does Piedt which is a nice change for an SA spinner.
Yeah, Harmer and Piedt will fight it out for the spinner's spot, don't see Tahir getting a game unless both get injured.

Don't see us playing two specialist spinners either, especially if Duminy is fit to bowl, and Elgar's slow left arm stuff isdn't bad for another option.

Think we might see Rabada get a debut at some point too.

1-5 is pretty much set. Duminy despite being awful at tests and more so in sub continent, his spin addition is what needed. So he gets a nod above Bavuma who I guess plays spin pretty well although watched him in one innings only. In between Tahir and Harmer, although Tahir seems to be in good form in limited overs, Harmer should play imo; gets revolution and bounce and will be pretty hand.

I always thought that Duminy was hard done by, when it came to tests; he has never had a chance to settle. He has played only 29 matches but was first selected 08/09. Comparing him to somebody like Faf who was selected in 2012 ish and has already played 22 matches. I think he has had rotten luck when it came to injuries at key times in his career. Also, strangely, I do not think that 6 is his position, I would have preferred him at 5 or 7 in line-up, largely because 6 tends to face the 2nd new ball often and this does not suit Duminy. Unfortunately, 7 is too low for him in the current SA line-up and you will not want to be pushing Amla AB further down.... If Quinny gets back into the team he might get the 6 position and Duminy could move to 7, he bats fantastically with the tail…

Guess I am a bit harsh but I'm coming from the memories of SA's India tour in 2009/2010. A long time back and he might have improved but he looked completely clueless against Harbhajan. Probably bread and butter for Ashwin this time. Agree that 7 might suit him better but as you have already mentioned its low for him in the current line up. Not sure how good is Vilas with the bat.

He is good (very solid), top order batsman for his franchise, lots of experience… good wicketkeeper to… Unfortunately because of Quinny he is unlikely to get an extended international career. One of those bad luck cases you get. Thinking about it he may actually yet be put at 6 in the line-up, could do it but unlikely...

Even tho Ashwin will eat him up, Duminy should play. Can hit the other bowlers around before Ashwin dismisses him, good enough a bowler to be second spinner, and adds a lot of value in the field.

Moonda reporting Duminy yet to recover and 50-50 chance that he will make it. If he can't make it in the end, there will be a problem in balancing the side. Elgar can bowl but he is a step down from Duminy. SA might have to think in terms of playing two frontline spinners if the pitch turns out that way. In that case probably Philander will have to go missing. Only one spinner in Harmer sounds like a bit risky to me.

Van Zyl can roll mediums too if needed. If Duminy sustains injury, Bavuma at 6 and Vilas at 7 followed by Steyn, Morkel, Harmer, Tahir (or Peidt)
