We're all aware of your feelings on Caddick, and I remain baffled that you think the likes of Harmison, Anderson etc. are even fit to lace his boots.
Speak for yourself Rich

Caddick at his peak obviously > Harmison or Anderson.
But by 2003 that peak was already a pretty distant memory, and things weren't going to improve by the time he was fit again. Post SL in 2001, how many decent performances did we really see from him? IIRC nothing whatsoever against Aus that summer, moderate in NZ, one decent performance at home to SL and another completely ineffective ashes until that final innings. However good he may have occasionally been in 1999 & 2000, his time was up.

After the First Test against Pakistan, he returned to the self we'd known 1993-1998 for the last six Tests that summer. As I said, though, he certainly still bowled well on occasions, even that very summer. The frustrating thing was that we all knew he could be doing much better.

Never better was this demonstrated than the NZ tour of 2001/02. He was England's best bowler, but he could easily have taken 30 wickets in 3 Tests, the rest of the attack was so poor. He didn't.

He bowled poorly in the first-innings of the SL series, then OK in the short second-innings. He then bowled superbly, absolutely superbly, in the Second Test, and his figures did not remotely do him justice. He was injured for the next 3 games and was brought back too soon. Was easily the best of a poor attack in the last Test against India.

Bowled poorly for much of The Ashes 2002/03, on mostly flat pitches on which he never offered much threat all career. Then got a ten-for in the last game.

As I said - this is still far, far better than Anderson and Harmison ever did for all their careers bar Harmison's first 7 in 2004. And this is when Caddick was not at his best.

Good grief I hope so. That's right at the end of the season. There's certainly hope that he'll be fit for the Tests earlier.

BTW, SA make 136/1 off 29.0 overs at Lunch. Decent effort so far from Duminy and Amla, hopefully they can both make centuries then Kallis, Prince and de Villiers can do something similar. Aside from Caddick (who's coming back from injury) the Somerset attack is truly woeful. Turner, Jones, Munday, Durston, Suppiah and de Bruyn. Hopefully they'll all get absolutely belted.

Game is only three days so they need to look to bat for about 150 overs, giving as many batsmen a chance as possible, then bowl for the rest of the game. Hopefully the weather will cooperate.

Damn, Duminy out just after Lunch. At least it was Caddick who got him.

Kallis in now - never have a better opportunity to start a tour well.

BTW, looks like Munday (who one or two have talked of as an England prospect ) has been absolutely smashed by Amla - 8-56-0 as of this post.

Hope if SA lose more than 4 or 5 wickets this innings, Caddick gets at least 5 or 6.

Don't take that for granted. They shouldn't, but David Wigley took a massive bag against an international batting-line-up earlier this year. Turner and Jones could yet do the same. 8-)

BTW, Munday now smashed for 74 off 10. Amla and Kallis really can bat as long as they like, and here's hoping they do.

And oddly, I've missed Trego, possibly because he didn't bowl early and with six bowlers already used (and Durston still to come) he presumably isn't fit to do so.

Somerset's batting is very weak - just one specialist opener in Edwards (poor so far in his career), de Bruyn (excellent) then Hildreth, Suppiah and Durston (all unproven though with promise). Plus the wicketkeeper Kieswetter and all-rounder Trego. So even though this is presumably the usual belter, decent chance for Nel, Ntini and Morkel.

Century for Amla, half-century (so far...) for Kallis.

These two have scored lots and lots together in the recent past.

Century-et-demi for Amla.

These two really do like batting together... hope Hingeh's enjoying this.

Reminds of when Tranmere played Liverpool in the FA Cup. My Grandad has always claimed to be a Liverpool fan but came out roaring for the mighty whites.

Century up for Kallis, good stuff there. Munday has been completely outclassed, 16 overs for 106. And his most recent 6 have "only" gone for 32 too.

Wonder if either of these two will retire "hurt" today, or more ideally, tomorrow?

Amla doesn't get the chance - run-out for 172.

Really, really hope Prince doesn't miss this opportunity now.
