Top players to feature in Pentagular Cup

Osman Samiuddin

February 6, 2008

The cream of the country's talent will take part in the Pentangular Cup, due to begin in cities around Pakistan, from February 10. For the first time in its 34-year-old history, only provincial teams will be competing for the prize, which includes Pakistan's four provinces as well as a team representing the Federal Areas.

Unusually for a domestic competition, the country's top players are taking part, a result of the board's policy to make it a tournament of the top 75 performers from the Quaid-e-Azam trophy. Additionally, 25 of the most promising young players from around the country have been called up to the squads.

Shoaib Malik, Pakistan's captain, will lead Punjab, Shahid Afridi is Sindh's captain, while Younis Khan leads the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP). Shoaib Akhtar, who is playing in a bid to prove his fitness before Australia tour Pakistan, will lead the Federal Areas, which includes players from Islamabad and surrounding regions. Balochistan, historically Pakistan's weakest cricket province, will include guest players from around the country in a bid to strengthen the side and will be led by Naseem Khan.

The tournament has undergone a number of format changes, often including departments and not always restricted to - as the name suggests - five teams. This year's tournament, however, is a return to how the tournament was originally intended and is among the most financially rewarding: not only do the winners claim a Rs 1 million prize (approx US$16,000), each member of the playing XI will be paid Rs 25,000 (approx US$400) per match. Non-playing members of the squad will get Rs 10,000 (approx US$160). The tournament will also be televised on a local sports channel.

There will be a short break after the first round of matches as general elections will be held in the country on February 18, but the four-day matches resume from February 22. The tournament, which kicks off with Sindh taking on NWFP in Karachi and Punjab playing the Federal Areas in Lahore, will be played on a single-league basis.

Punjab and Sindh squads definatley the strongest as expected but I think the fereal areas team might be hard to beat considering their bowling.

Shoaib not pleased with being picked for Federal Areas, apparently. According to DAWN he's said he's not interested in playing for anything else than Islamabad.

No results either, yet. So much for prestigious competition.

Mate, Islamabad IS Federal Areas. Federal Areas is the name given to territories under direct central government control, such as the Capital Region Territory (Islamabad), FATA etc.

The relevant quote is,

Shoaib, however, has said that he is not playing in the Pentangular Cup for any incentives but for his region Islamabad.
So Shoaib is apparantly playing in the Pentagular Cup primarily to represent his home city, which we know is a crock of bull**** but it by no means implies he's not please to be picked for Federal Areas, on the contrary in fact.

PCB struggling with shocking player linkage. Apparently all players are debutants.

Hopefully Khan will get a consistent go a few more years down the line. Would be a shame to end with Ray Price as your only international wicket.

Of course I support Punjab but I want to see the Baluchi's pull off an upset....

that'd be terrific.

You should support Baluchi's since Multan and Baluch have been combined to give the Baluch more star power.

I think he should be given a go straight away. With Shoaib's career on its last legs we need a replacement who can let it go quich and Sohail fits perfectly in that catorgary.

From another website.

I was watching Sikandar bakht program on indus and younis was there after the first days of play. When asked question about sohail khan, he said he is not only agressive and fast bowler but he is very smart as well. He said, wicket was green and bowl was swinging and sohail was pitching the ball up continuosly.

Younis was teasing sohail while batting and he said to him, hit him, see if u can bowl boncers but to sohail credit, he didn't listen him and kept him bowling full.......Younis rate him very higly.

He also rate Yasir shah (leggie) and aslam(leggie) very higly, both plays for peshwar.

I think that Pakstan should really look to make this a permanent fixture, with perhaps each team playing each other twice. There are a lot of very good players evenly spread out and this tournament will benefit people like Sohail Khan who need to break into international cricket well by helping him prove to the selectors that he can get Test match batsmen out.
