expand on this. I think he came in at 7 for ages which is an ok spot in an ODI - where did you want him to bat?

I think he could have been an excellent no5 in ODI's & in tests as well. I think in Hadlee's book a few years ago he noted that people in CD wanted Oram to focus on his batting while the NZ selectors wanted him to develop his bowling.

Now he seems to be a bowler who bats a bit. Also, he's had a lot of injury problems probably in large part due to the bowling. I was wondering when he announced his retirement from test cricket how his career might have gone if he had just been a specialist batsman and developed that part of his game more.

OTOH, his bowling has been very useful & there was a lot of competition for places in the middle order, so I understand why they went in that direction.

I don't think they'd drop Elliot. His FC form is poor, but he got 50 off about 30 balls in their last T20 game. I would like to see Tipene Friday get a game too.

Fringe Otago pace bowler James Fuller has signed a three-year deal with English county Gloucestershire but will be available for the province this summer, Volts coach Mike Hesson says.

The New Zealand Under-19 representative played two first-class games for Otago at the end of the summer with limited success.

He took two wickets for 231 runs but the athletic 20-year-old showed enough to convince Hesson he had a bright future.

However, because Fuller is recovering from corrective surgery on his ankle and will not be available until after Christmas, he was not considered for a domestic contract.

Even if he was fit he may have struggled to nab one of the 12 contracts on offer.

Former Black Caps coach and Gloucestershire director of cricket John Bracewell was impressed by Fuller's efforts at the under-19 world cup in Christchurch last summer and seized the opportunity to sign him.

The South African-born player qualifies for Gloucestershire as a home-grown player courtesy of a British passport.

But Fuller's decision to throw his hat with Gloucestershire will limit his opportunities in New Zealand.

"James has been and will continue to be a big part of our future plans, including this season," Hesson said.

"He is still able to play as an overseas player for us ... so it makes no difference to us for this season.

"Gloucester are keen that he plays as much cricket over here as he can beforehand.

"The whole idea is to get as much cricket into James over the next couple of years as possible.

Gloucestershire director of cricket John Bracewell said: “It is great news to have signed James as he has enormous potential as a pace bowler and ball striker.

“He is a genuine athlete who has chosen cricket as his profession and Gloucestershire will reap the benefit.”

Fuller said: "The opportunity of playing cricket for Gloucestershire under John Bracewell, on so many famous grounds, and amongst such great players is truly the chance of a lifetime.

"I am extremely grateful to Gloucestershire for having faith in me, and look forward to repaying that through my pace bowling and all-round ability."

Also, Duffy sounds very promising, a bit of depth developing in the pace bowling stocks.

He was rightfully miles away from an Otago contract 3 yearsa go, they only hand out 12 of them.

A good move by Fuller as there is nothing like the 2nd XI competition in NZ like there is England. Hes had a good apprenticeship the last 2 years. Hope he doesn't do a Caddick though, and one of the NZ provinces offer him a contract, as he looks promising.
