Test cricket's greatest?
Berry True relives what will go down as one of the greatest Test matches of all time.
Cricket Web XI vs West Indies - 1st Test
Cricket, glorious cricket. It began as a clash of two of the lowest ranked teams in Test cricket, but by the time Neil Pickup completed the final over of the match, it was booked as a true classic.
Some call it the "best Test match ever", and this was certainly very special at the very least. A battle throughout, the first Test at the Queen's Park Oval had it all - runs, wickets, tempers, and a dramatic nailbiting finish.
Twice did Neil Pickup bowl the Cricket Web XI back into a game that seemed on course for a sporting draw. However, his most significant achievement did not come whilst bowling, but rather in the field. With two balls to go before lunch, Pickup executed an unbelievable run out Brian Lara, as he ran through for what seemed a simple single. The Webhead vice-captain pounced on the ball from midon and in one smooth flip, struck the stumps whilst diving forward.
Lara was made to return to the pavilion and tea was taken. Two balls after the interval, Pickup fired up the dream once again. Shivnarine Chanderpaul had batted superbly for 37, but received a delivery that turned sharply out of the rough and he was taken at bat-pad on the legside. Another Pickup over, and Dwayne Bravo met the same fate. Within the space of 4 overs the game went from the steady complexion of Lara and Chanderpaul batting comfortably toward a draw, to the unsettled stance that is 197/6.
The best was still yet to come.
For the second time in the match the game seemed to be slipping out of the hands of the tourists. At the start of the last hour, Kyle Wright produced a near unplayable delivery with some help from the pitch, and Denesh Ramdin was bowled for a gutsy 32. The dismissal brought Rawl Lewis to the crease and with more than 12 overs still left in the game, there was not a calm figure at the ground.
A collective "ooooh" departed from the lips of all present, as Chris Butler failed to hold on to a simple chance at second slip, and Lewis survived his second delivery at the expense of Wright. He went on to make the chance count, and slammed Hoy over the midwicket ropes for six. Batting sensibly, Ian Bradshaw and Lewis arrived at the closing rounds of the scrap with the finish line in sight and both teams still hungry for the tape.
It all came down to the final over. Ian Bradshaw took strike to Neil Pickup, who was ready for one final gasp...
Pickup starts over the wicket...
107.1 Pickup to Bradshaw: struck on the pad!!! LOUD SHOUT!!! GIVEN!!! Neil Pickup may have pulled a rabbit out of the hat for the Cricket Web XI! That one was a lovely topspinner and Bradshaw has to go!
IDR Bradshaw lbw b Pickup 28 (85)
2 fours, 0 sixes
285/8 (107.1 overs)
Daren Powell is the new man. He can handle a bat, but he just hasn't done it much in international cricket. Pickup in...
107.2 Pickup to Powell: tossed up outside legstump; Powell plays back and the ball turns sharply... it's popped up! Pickup dives full stretch and he's taken it!!!!!!! Neil "Sadsack" Pickup has pulled off a blinder and for the second time in this innings, he has spun the game the way of the Webheads! What a match!!!
Fidel Edwards comes to the crease with 4 balls to survive and Neil Pickup could end this game with a hat-trick...
Edwards takes his guard and prepares to face Pickup. The last man. What will come of this...
107.3 Pickup to Edwards: Nice loop and Edwards pushes forward, head over the ball perfectly. He defends it back down the wicket and Pickup offers a polite appeal.
He spins around and glares at Edwards, who in turn inspects his bat and jogs on the spot.
107.4 Pickup to Edwards: tossed up outside legstump and Edwards pushes forward; the ball RIPS past the outside edge into the gloves of Moerk! Moerk can't believe it. He's got his head in his glove and Pickup is crouched at the over end, staring at the spot that ball landed.
He adjusts his glasses and heads back to his mark...
107.5 Pickup to Edwards: GOOGLY!!! Hit him on the pad!!! Pickup goes up with his loudest appeal yet!!!
All of CWLand rose to their feet...
Umpire Taufel pauses and then says "not out".
Pickup in disbelief once more. David Kennett had run all the way from deep midwicket and was about to grab a stump out of the ground. He mutters something and turns around to head back.
Brendon Goff calls Kennett back, but doesn't discipline him. Instead he's put him into a second gully position.
A slip, a short gully and a regulation spinner's gully, a legslip, a silly midoff, a short extra cover, and a short leg, a silly midon and a straight short midon.
Last ball...
107.6 Pickup to Edwards: flighted on middle stump and he goes for the slog sweep! It's off the top edge...
...and it just clears the fingertips of Cloete at slip... they've gone for one and Edwards trots back for the second with a broad smile on his face. He turns and embraces Rawl Lewis. No manliness compromised, but the rest of the West Indian team rushes out onto the field to greet them!
Great scenes for the home team and the crowd erupts into soca and calypso.
