I'd like to see something like this for the India Test:

Marsh/Head
Smith
Labuschagne
Green
McSweeney
Hardie/Webster/O.Davies
Carey
Sutherland
Cummins
Lyon
Haze

Didn't want to be completely boring so some bold choices like leaving one of Marsh or Head out and the other opening (Mitch Marsh, young Shaun not quite ready yet). Depending on Green/Marsh/Hardie/Webster's bowling we could even potentially play another bat (Head or Marsh I guess) instead of Sutherland

You rate mcsweeney that highly? I like him but even at his recent best I don't know if he's ready for test cricket yet. Needs a big 1000+ run 50 average shield season first.

having two non specialist openers face off against Bumrah with the new ball is a recipe for disaster

Keep in mind this is taking to account that we're like 7 months away, that's a long time. If we'er picking the Test team tomorrow it might look different

Anyway I think McSweeney looks really classy. Would rather see him grind out 40 (125) than Head threaten to win a game with a big ton but actually make 15 (20) every knock

He's just notched up a ton on a pitch which is honestly difficult to distinguish from the outfield against the form side in the country, fwiw

A poor first innings, and then a failure to really capitalise on a strong position in the second dig. Ultimately too few runs on that deck.

I thought early on it didn’t look like being our day: Rachin dropped Marsh, then Marsh had one trickle back and miss his off stump by a millimetre, then Henry had Carey out LBW on field only for it to be showing as missing on DRS.

Some analysis from the TVNZ website as well:

‘The Black Caps may rue not bowling Phillips earlier. In a sign of desperation, Scott Kuggeleijn began bowling short (Neil Wagner style), with fielders on the boundary and no slips in place, but his over went for 10 and there will be questions too about why Sears wasn’t brought on earlier and indeed why he didn’t bowl shorter and more aggressively to Cummins.

As the post mortems begin, there will be a feeling that New Zealand wasted a golden opportunity to set Australia a higher total yesterday.’

On the bright side my Gambhir bets paid off big time this week. Pity I didn't go all in this morning, I just thought $3.20 looked a little low for an Aussie victory given the circumstances. Silly me.

I knew NZ's record against Australia is bad but it wasn't clear how bad before I looked it up. This is the last 30 years:

Even Bangladesh have done better ffs. And this despite a big chunk of it coming st a time when NZ had their best team ever. It just doesn't even look real.
Dismal, didn't think that Danny Morrison inspired win in 1993 would best the last one at home for over 30 years.

A key component of winning the WTC was Jamieson. Could go through his career not playing Australia in a test. I had pretty much written the Black Caps off once he was out of this series.

Re: NZ's long-term Test record against Australia, they did pretty well from 1997 to 2002 under Fleming. Australia were clearly the better side in that period but they showed enough fight and some inventive captaincy to be competitive mostly.

It really went downhill from the 04/05 Oz tour starting with the match of the McGrath/Gillespie partnership. With the exception of Hobart 2011 they've been constantly overawed and disappointing, even with sides much stronger on paper than they had in the late 90s.

Yeah I quite fancied our chances with Jamieson in the team, hell Conway looked like he was even finding his way to form again.

Still all that said lots of promising takeaways from the series even if 2-0 is a disappointing result. Henry looks every bit ready to lead the attack, Sears and O’Rourke showed they have a lot of promise. Phillips showed that he should be genuinely thought of as an allrounder.

Would be nice to have a reply series in the next 2 years

Good knock, but he's still only averaging 40~ this season and 35 last season. Decks have been dog**** and he's playing in a questionable lineup, but I still don't think on current ability hey'll average much more than current marnus (~30-35) and marnus's cieling is still way higher.

Yeah I'm of the same mind but tbf he's not in a dissimilar position to where Marnus was when he first got picked, basically on eye test.

Marnus got picked as a #5/6 spin bowling allrounder for pakistan initially though, didn't he? Langer just decided to throw him in at 3 for the late home summer after that because he liked his attitude. Mcsweeney could go over to county cricket and make a million runs like marnus did though, I think he has that level of ability in him based on grade performances and his development recently.
