No hopers who made it

39 wickets @ 38 through his first twelve Tests, of which five were against mid-2010s West Indies and one against Bangladesh
Struggled to make it out second-tier Saffa domestic cricket too. Great example.

Scott Boland also comes to mind. Noone really thought he'd end up much more than a gun Shield bowler.

John Wright is another one
This is a really good shout. The back end of his career was miles better than the first half. Was a bit like Gooch, though Gooch tbf was not really considered ordinary at the start, just he got even better with age.

Chin Music

State Captain
He could also fit into both categories.
I would have said that Jimmy was a serious talent as a youngster who spent years failing before finally waking up and smelling the copy. Surely a "no-hoper" who made it would be someone with a lot less talent who somehow gouged out a career. For England, that would be Paul Collingwood.

Mind you, I'm kind of of the opinion that if they were playing Test Cricket in the first place then they were hardly no hopers. Think we need more like Wagner who you'd have just never considered as a Test Cricketer (let alone a good one) early on. Not sure whether someone like Voges would count?

Yeah he'd be a decent shout you'd think. Huss maybe as well. Didn't dayboo til he was 30 odd, though I think he was more held back because Aus had so many guns rather than him being thought of as no good.

Whatever it takes!!!
My very first post on Wagner is pretty on the ball too. :)

Sounds like Wagner is kinda the ideal 3rd seamer any side would love, reading all this discussion. Why would anyone ever want to even consider dropping the guy who literally got a fifer in the previous test? And in India at times, you can basically open with one of your spinners if the tracks turn so much, and use one of your 2 seamers in basically the 3rd seamer role to get some control later in the innings. So I do not see any grounds at all for dropping Wagner in India. If the NZ selectors do that, they are dumber than every Indian selector ever and that is saying something, given the ones we have/had.

Yeah, I was thinking of Hussey too, but as you say, I think he was always good enough, he just didn't get the opportunities.

Turns out my very first posts on Ashwin weren't that bad lol.

Almost sure that Ashwin is an off-spinner, SJS. And the guy is pretty good for an off-spinner too.
Go TN!!!

Felt really bad that I had jinxed them!!! Badri, Vijay and Balaji proving their class when it really mattered..

And how good is Ashwin!!! The guy has a lot of potential.. Decent batsman, good fielder and does get his offberak to turn quite a bit. If only he can impart more consistency (he is a poor man's Krezja, atm) and try and develop a doosra...

These weren't so bad either, on The Answer.
