Mitchell Johnson's Best Spell?

Mitchell Johnson was perhaps one of the best zone bowlers there was. He had many spells when he turned the heat, which ranks the best?

Probably that one against South Africa early in his career. I'm sure we all know the one. It made me think he was going to become ATG for sure then he didn't reach that level again til the 2013 ashes

Yeah vs South Africa is where he really looked like an ATG. It's a shame those occasions were so infrequent

That's the 8-fer in Perth? I felt the SA batters played a bit sloppily in that one, maybe cas it was their first time playing him. And somewhat tarnished by flopping in the next innings.

Just rewatched it, he apparently got 5 for 2 in a 4 over spell.

I guess it's hard for anyone to come close to that often, but absolutely you'd think he'd have ended up a sub 26 average quick which he didn't come close to really

One of his overlooked spells is his 6-38 in the 2010 Ashes. Not the best in terms of pace and bounce but I don't think he ever swung it more effectively, slinging it wickedly from off. Look at 5:24!

The amazing thing is that he did it with the seam wobbling all over the place as well.

Adelaide 7 for for sure. There was a great piece about it from Jarrod Kimber at the time

Yeah Adelaide 2013 for sure.......I was there and it was pure theatre, the atmosphere in the ground was like nothing I've ever seen. I recall thinking at the time that even though my team was getting battered I was witnessing some incredible cricket history being scripted right in front of me.

Also are we talking about spells as in bowling unchanged or entire innings performances?

I still think is SA demolition was his best spell and probably one of the greatest spells ever. Krezja kept getting moved around the field and catches kept coming to him lol

I will always consider this spell in the 2nd test in 2009 to be Johnson at his most devastating. Not the most wickets, but he ripped out two wickets in the first over, injured Smith and Kallis, and then bowled one of the best yorkers I have ever seen.

Raufy that loose ****er umpiring.

Johnson basically owned Graeme Smith's left thumb

Nothing says "I'm ****ing shitting myself" like someone jauntily skipping around on the way out to bat. Particularly when it quickly becomes evident they can't get out of the way.
