Just stumbled on an article about Proctor and was interested in people's views as to how he might have fared given a full test career, particularly from those who've actually seen him play.

His first class stats and the few reports/profiles I've managed to find on the Net, suggest he may have been capable of posting similar test figures to Imran.

Any thoughts?

I think he would easily have been one of the game's best allrounders. He has some rather freakish records at domestic level: Six centuries in consecutive innings, six sixes in an over, century before lunch and a hattrick on the same day (twice), high score of 254 (FC) and 154* (List A), best bowling 9/71 (FC) and 6/13 (List A).

He might well have turned out to be one of the greatest test all-rounders of all time. The South African team at the end of the 1960's was the greatest test team of all time, and Procter was one of its stars.

Then again, he might have been a choker.

Do you really think so? I have thought about this a lot in my life. It's one of my biggest regrets that we never got to see the SA team of the 1970s and 80s take on the rest of the cricketing world. Had we, I don't think anyone would be talking about the current Aussies being the best ever.

Proctor was an all-rounder who could've been selected for his bowling alone - his batting was a bonus, although it was pretty special on its own too. Despite playing in only 7 Tests, he took 41 wickets at around 16 apiece, with a SR of around 37. If any of you have never seen him bowl before, I'd recommend you watch some tape of him as soon as you can. He has the most unusual action I have ever seen.

Dead right I do. They were absolutely awesome, but as you so rightly point out we will never really know. I first saw the South African side in 1965 - and they were pretty awesome then. That was just before Procter came to light, of course. They had Peter Pollock as strike bowler.

Much has been made of Procter's action, some even went as far as saying he bowled 'off the wrong foot' which, of course, is nonsense. It's an optical illusion (leave Murali alone) caused by a very early left arm drop and a totally chest-on action. Very strange. I remember seeing him bowl offies towards the end of his career, I think.
