He was an essential part of England's massive improvement into the mid-2000s. And absolutely at the peak of his powers in the series before black dog turned up; two fine hundreds in SA (one match saving, the other series winning), his best ashes series ever and then 190 in Pakistan. For him to fall victim to depression at that point in his career was a real eye-opener, perhaps more so than others claiming depression when perhaps they were simply on the wrong end of a hammering.
