Kohli stands down as Test captain

Don't think his batting troubles stemmed from the captaincy. He's the sort of guy who thrives in the spotlight. I think we'll see him retire long before any of us thought he would. Probably with an avg of 45-47.
Kohli averaging more with captaincy had a lot to do with his peak coinciding with the captaincy imo. Could very well have another few years of averaging 50 from him, I think.

Average of mid-40s is a bit too pessimistic but I kind of agree that Kohli may not have that many years left in his career, especially now that he's relinquished the captaincy.

Don't think that would happen - that would mean another 2-3 years or so of ~20ish averages. He wouldn't last in the team.

i loved ****ting on him but he was the perfect test captain for us after dhoni's incompetent test captaincy away from home

i am pretty sure he is going to be dominant this year or the next and have a run for a year or two that'd make the writers go "King Kohli!" again

but for ****'s sake DO NOT make rahul the test captain

if bcci do not want to eat their own words from recent times, make rahul t20 captain while rohit becomes test and ODI captain. no one cares about international t20s

Whatever it takes!!!
I definitely agree with @OverratedSanity that there seem to be issues between him and the board, specifically Ganguly. That said, not many Indian captains have had cordial relationships with the board through my time of following Indian cricket. The current coach, Dravid himself, quit the captaincy due to the toll it took on his mental side and his batting. I think Virat has reached a similar situation.

It absolutely sucks that he could not see through that England series wiht that one test pending this year. I think if we win that, it is basically his victory and it will be hollow to see someone else lift the trophy after his displays as captain that series. I dont want to go into the soap opera style narratives going around coz I feel at least 90% of it is pure BS. Every captain has a shelf life and I think Virat feels he has reached his. As others have said, if he can rediscover his batting form, that will be a worthy trade-off.

Rohit will take over all-formats, I expect and it will be funny to see the selection committee walk back what they said earlier but all that smoke and noise aside, we need him to be at his best as a batsman in the next 3-4 years which are gonna be very important for Indian cricket.

He is the best Indian test captain I have seen and possibly our best ever. Its a wonderful legacy to leave behind and he has taken a team ofmiddling tourists into a team that is actually expected to beat SA in SA when we were without 2 or 3 of our main players. That is an amazing legacy to leave behind.

why make rohit captain of test match format when he 34 it dont make sense he only has another 2 years max at rest level as a batsman

I'll be honest, considering all things Pant as Test captain isn't the worst thing in the world.
He's not a good captain yet - let him learn in the IPL first. And it might **** with his keeping/batting. Dude doesn't need more pressure than already trying to rescue us at 95/4 every other game.

It is honestly very close to the worst cricket related thing I can think of. Marginally behind Phil Hughes and Raman Lamba.

jking but it'd be bad.

I personally don't see it to be that much worse compared to IPL captains KL and Rohit getting it tbh. The really out there options would be Bumrah as specialist overseas captain and Ashwin as specialist home captain.
