I vaguely recall an apocryphal but persistent story that when JWHT won his Olympic gold that Douglas sr. was the referee but in reality he was just present ringside in his capacity as an ABA notable.

The story goes, that after Douglas took the new ball ahead of him, Barnes countered: "That's right. You bowl 'em in and then ask me to bowl 'em out."
