Scott seems to be the match winner in Otago these days. Not bad considering the shock when he got a contract!

Jeff Wilson was one of my favourite Fullback/Winger in world rugby. i have never seen him play cricket though. but his rugby is great....one of the fastest players in his time.

Jeff Wilson, a genuine All Black great, has been named in the Black caps squad for the series against the World 11.

This guy is a genuine sporting superstar. 44 tries in 60 tests for the AB's. He quit rugby to give cricket another shot a year or so back.

if anyone will succeed it will be him.

FYI....in his last game he hit 44 off 28 balls to beat Aussie in 1993. He hit the winning runs.

Just one of those sportsman!

Remember when he got smashed by George Gregan losing the ball, a certain try and the bledisloe cup in the process?

Yes I do - not a great night at all.

I also remember him going over in the corner the next year to ensure the Bledisloe came back to its rightful home.

I was just responding to Camel56. And I don't see your comparison between Randell and Wilson at all.

And I don't suggest it should either. I don't think I said that anywhere.

I think it is great that Wilson. He has proven big game temperament.

Aldridge, Schwass etc are just medium pace green top bullies. McMillan is definitely not fast. Last time I saw Wilson and McMillan bowling for Otago I thought Wilson was quicker; although they I haven't seen Wilson bowl this year. McMillan would be around Chris Martin if that.

Goldie will prove you all wrong. Well done the Kiwi selectors.

A big game performer in cricket for NZ once, right? And 12 years ago. Why don't we bring back Martin Crowe, as he was performing around the same time and doesn't have consistent recent form.

For NZ'z sake it would be good to see Wilson perform here but we need to develop specialists that will compete on the international level. I don't think anyone could realistically say that Wilson is a better all-rounder than Canning or Franklin at this time.

Let the train spotting begin. Here's the stats for this year's State Shield.

JW Wilson 7 wickets at 17.85 at 3.90 rpo
JW Wilson 82 runs at 16.40 avg with a SR of 110.81

TK Canning 7 wickets at 12.14 at 3.26 rpo
TK Canning 47 runs at 15.66 avg with a SR of 41.96

JEC Franklin 4 wickets at 44.75 at 3.89 rpo
JEC Franklin 66 runs at 16.50 avg with a SR 57.89

I would say Canning's bowling figures are somewhat flattered by the fact that he's played on greener surfaces as evidenced by Otago averaging 252 per innings with the bat and Auckland averaging 166 (not withstanding crap Auckalnd batting).

So, Wilson on form is at least as good as Franklin and Canning.

Jeff Wilson in State Shield since his move back to cricket in 2002/03

15 matches, 13 innings, 351 runs@27.00, 3 fifties, H/S:86
68.1 overs, 10 maidens, 12 wickets@20.67, RPO:3.64

a couple of footnotes,
*in 2003/04 he mostly played as specialist batsman because he couldn't bowl
*his three fifties have been scored in very quick time - 86(67), 66(59) and 50(35) meaning he is perfect for the late overs
*glen turner has publicy said he is one of the best slip fielders he has ever seen - and we all now the pace he'll contribute in the outfield

amittedly the only unlucky person would be tama canning but his bowling wouldn't be very effective on anything but NZ tracks and he is one of the most inconsistent batsman in the NZ domestic competition

good selection IMO, the only downsides being his age and his track record of injuries

I think we in NZ are a bit obsessed with age. Look at the average age of the Australian team.

Hopefully, Jeff Wilson will be less overawed by the occasion than Canning or Franklyn based on his 'big stage' appearances to date.

I am happy with his selection. But, I guess time will tell.

International Coach
Wilson is one of the few players in NZ FC cricket with genuine international standard talent. I haven't seen too much of him since his comeback, but keep in mind that he was an absolute schoolboy cricket sensation, (probably the best in the country at the time?) good enough to play, and win a game for, New Zealand when he was 19. Most of the other possibles being suggested are mediocre players who will never amount to much at the highest level. Tama Canning's bowling abilities are laughable by international standards- Styris has him covered in the bowling department alone. Wilson, at 31, is more than 3 years younger than Cairns, 4 years younger than Harris, 2 years younger than Astle, and is also younger than Fleming. Oh, and he's only 18 months or so older than Bond.

welcome back Jeff Wilson....

I know that at least a couple of us were speculating about an ODI call up last season & it's good to see it come thru'..............

I have no reason to suspect that he'd be averawed in any way based upon his 60 caps for the Blacks, but I'd still expect him to be 12th man for the 1st OD with a cameo in the field, and then in the starting lineup for the remainder........

I've only got a slight gripe re his age & being a 3rd 'allrounder' after Cairns & Oram, but that'd be no different as to when Franklin plays IMO..........the Black Caps ODI outfit is pretty settled so I don't see too much in this selection to get upset / excited about, mind you if he does manages to fire up then I'd hope to see him in the ODIs v AUS, and who knows what could happen particularly if his bowling is tight...............

for example hasn't RSA just given a Test debut to a 30 yr old seam bowler with great success????

sportychic33

State 12th Man
though, think about it . . he is replacing Butler, what position has Butler in the majority of his international career been playing for NZ? 12th man. . . i think that the line up is fairly settled. . . we don't need another all-rounder in the team but it is an excellent ploy to get the crowds in . but i would like to see Wilson have one game and see if he can foot it on the international stage and there isn't a better series to try it than this upcoming series v the FICA XI

Yes but the guy in question was a proven performer in SA FC cricket for the last few seasons. Unfortunately he is also prone to injury and didn't see out the game.
