Kallis averages a good 5 points higher than Border with a similar body of work. Should count to something.

He was a warrior on that tour. Gooch still better against WI though imo. Shame Amarnath had that total shocker at home to them or he would be in the conversation too.

Crowe scored 188 in the Windies as a 22/23 year old. Then in 1986/7 the Windies toured NZ. Crowe's scores were 3, 119 (1st test draw), 10, 104 (2nd test loss), and 83, 9 not out (3rd test win).

Gooch had the age advantage overseas yes, but hundreds in Jamaica and Barbados against that attack from an opener is special. Even if it was on one of the slower decks, Crowe's 188 was a great innings, but his tour was one to forget other than that. Excellent against peak Marshall in 1986/87.

Yeah. Border has the more balanced record in terms of both opponents and conditions. He also had the weaker team and the tougher batting era. He probably edges it against quality bowling. I am not a big peer/media ratings guy but Border does also edge Kallis there. All Kallis really has is that superior average, but the gap is big enough for me to give the comparison some time of the day.

Kallis played 15 games in England though.
