Jack Noregia dies

Former T&T spinner and West Indies spinner Jack Noregia has passed away aged 67 in Port-of-Spain.

I suppose our poster from T&T would of made an obligaty here on Cricket Web, so I will give the link to his player profile:

For a spinner of his class, it is a shame he never played 4 Tests.

I was surprised to see this make a big headline on cricinfo because the name wasn't too familiar and they made it sound like he was one of the alltime greats, but I noticed from his profile he did take 9-95 once despite only playing 4 tests against India in 71 or something!

Yes 9/95 in one innings. If I'm not mistaken, it was at the Queen's Park Oval in his home country of Trinidad. I intended to post a thread on this yesterday, but I figured that no one would take interest.

Jack Noreiga was one of the many under-capped spinners to come out of Trinidad and indeed, the West Indies. He was more than a useful talent as he proved with his 9 for 95 as well as 5/129 in his final Test bowling stint. Noreiga played all four of his Test matches in one series - v India 1970/71. Indeed, if not for the presence of Lance Gibbs in the side, who knows what he could have become...

I believe Lance Gibbs was another Trini? It wouldnt surprise me that Noregia's 9/95 was at QPO as QPo and along with Guyana seem to produce the most spinner friendly wickets in the Caribbean. Certainly I know QPO does.

Sonny Ramadham and Alf Valentine I believe where fellow Trini's.

Sonny Ramadham and Alf Valentine I believe where fellow Trini's.

Gibbs was Guyanese and Valentine was Jamaican. Ramadhin was a Trini.

Recently the QPO pitch has assisted the seamers a bit early on Day 1 and deteriorated on late Day4/Day 5.

He would of played more Tests if he were from any other country if he werent from Trinidad as he had Gibbs in front of him and Ramadhin and Valintine as well.
