don't really agree, maybe 2 points higher average but it was not his physicals that made him a horrible player of pace
It made him a horrible fielder and a more horrible runner though. And say, do you really think at that level fitness has no impact on things like reflexes and body movement?? Just look at Prithvi Shaw now, got dropped from Mumbai Ranji team even.....

was talking batting mainly, and averaging 1-2 points more is what I meant by him being a better runner, overall I really don't think stats matter all that much in cricket, that's why I don't really believe 20s and 30s pacers were slow either.

Was he scoring hundreds consistently between 40 and 45? Was he averaging 60?
Boycott played 5 English seasons after his final test, playing over 20 matches in each except for his final season (13). He was aged 41-45. He scored 61 in his final inming, a county match.

98 matches 166 innings 8070 @ 61.13 25 tons 40 fifties

He was a top 10 runscorer in 82, 83 and 85 (top 3 in 82 and 83). Averaged above 50 in all 5 seasons, and above 60 in 3 of them.

Notable bowlers who played county in this time frame…

Malcolm Marshall, Derek Underwood, Garth Le Roux, Imran Khan, Andy Roberts, Bob Willis, Joel Garner, Colin Croft, Michael Holding, Richard Hadlee, Terry Alderman Courtney Walsh.

Guys like Botham, Kapil, Clarke and Daniel were also around.

Just love this post.. So, There seems to be something wrong in 80s too. One can say there is no way a 45 year old would have a chance against Bumrah.

My recent study into Geoffrey Boycott's FC career led me to the answer of the question of how a 45-Year-Old Great English Opener would play Malcolm Marshall.

1st June 1985

Geoffrey was nearly 45 year old, Marshall was bowling a banging spell (5/48), I will put runs made by the rest of the batters next to it, Boycott scored

115 (141)
25 (110)

Guess we can imagine a 45-Year-Old man facing Malcolm Marshall.

Guess that means Hobbs late age FC achievements aren't that hot.

depends, are Sachin's teen achievements not hot because Mushtaq Mohammad and Graeme Pollock made hundreds as teenagers?
Pretty sure it's part of Pollocks allure too.

Mushtaq was against a poor attack if I recall.

Anyways my point was more on accomplishing things in FC that aren't replicated in tests, making them somewhat suspect for me.

So other great players replicating a certain feat doesn't make it less impressive, great.

also, btw, Mushtaq had a hundred against Fred Trueman, Brian Statham, Tony Lock, Fred Titmus, Barry Knight and Ted Dexter at Trent Bridge when he was 18.
