Is Wright getting Stagnant?

He is the same guy we all didnt tire singing praises of as recently as six months ago. Now he is the fall guy. GREAT !

What do we know of whats happening in the side and what John Wright is advising AND what the response of the seniors and the captain is to his advise AND how much is the interference by others , consultants et al, in his work AND how much of a free hand does he really have etc etc.

To sit on our desk tops and fire away on our keyboards is the easiest thing to do in the world. "Wright is stagnating" is plain rhetoric nothing more and nothing less.

If I have to fault anything about John Wright in the last couple of months it is the "apparent" lack of protest to the foisting of a consutant(whatever that may mean) over him with him (Wright) continuing ti get the flack if things do not improve and the 'consultant' getting the kudos for having made the vital difference , if they do.

Maybe Wright did ptotest and his protestations fell on deaf ears. Then I would expect him to quit.

Maybe he will.

There are reports that suggest that Wright will be leaving soon and India will probably going to appoint Gavaskar or Sandeep Patel as the new coach

Steve Waugh has also shown interest in coaching Indian team.

What do you guys think about Steven, would he turn out to be a good coach?

Maninder Singh: Look at Woolmer. He has done a lot for Pakistan since he came in. He made Shoaib Malik a number three, when he batted at number seven regularly. He made Shahid Afridi into a regular spin option. He made Shoaib Akhtar disciplined, and you don't see the 'express talk in public. He gave confidence to Abdul Razzaq and Salman Butt. What has John Wright done?

Srikkanth: When the team is doing well, eevryone is praising the coach, but when they're not doing well, he gets all the brickbats.

Maninder: When the team does well, nobody needs a coach. When they DON'T do well, the coach is needed.

Chikka: John Wright has been a very good coach. There have been improvements in the team.

Manni: John Wright has contributed nothing to the team. It is the individual players who have worked hard, so there have been improvements. At this stage, HE has to motivate the players.

Both talk sense. There has been a lot of support for Wright, each time a whisper questions his contribution. But if you look at what has happened with the team, what great thing have they done? The progress of the team is not in speeches made in press conferences, or smiling faces when they're doing well in one match, but in consecutive tournament victories, which have not come. There are times when a coach needs to be more active. Successful teams have active coaches. John Wright is anything but active.

Interesting interview.

I do give John Wright some credit for India's achievement, but i do believe that lately JW seems to be short of ideas. Maybe its time for a change.

The problem is always 'external' !!

This is the classical attitude of the majority and this is the worst possible attitude anyone who is looking for improvement can have.

It has to be the pitch. If its not the pitch its the umpiring. If its not the umpiring its bad luck/injuries and what have you. If not that its the politics of the cricket board. If not that it is the selectors. If not that its the stupid contract system. If not that its the foreign coach !!

HA !!

The only people who have an iota of of a possibility to overcome their problems are those who first look to see if the problem is internal. Because that is most under control of the self, the most likely to be 'improvable' and the most likely cause for all you know !!

Does anyone ever think, the problem could be with our players, their skills, their attitudes, their reluctance to show guts, determination, rise above personal ambitions etc etc.

Maybe we are not good enough. Maybe the other team is better.

This is not to say that external factors dont affect the performance but we have such a defensive attitude and are so good at blaming everyone except ourselves that the chances of our improving and ever becoming world beaters must be pretty low inspite of the superstars we boast of !

What about asking Sehwag to open in tests? I think Wright had a fair bit to do with it as well and it has turned out to be a master stroke. He actually helped to solve half of India's biggest problem.

Same with the inclusion of Harbhajan Singh in 2001 against Australia, its helped India big time. Before then we had a mix of Nilesh Kulkarni, Sairaj Bahatule, Rahul Sanghvi and Sarandeep Singh who were absolutely slaughtered by Andrew Flower.

The spinners whom Andy Flower feasted on were Sunil Joshi (yet another temperamental spinner), Murali Karthik (who has returned) and Sarandeep Singh (slow, flat and predictable). That said, Harbhajan Singh is extremely temperamental, and that has cost the team many a match.

He also opened with Deep Dasgupta and Parthiv Patel (once in NZ, which failed), and even Hemang Badani. None of them worekd. It is a totally different matter that Sehwag applied himself at the top.

Yes Arjun when Pakistani players succeed it is due to their intelligent coach but when Indian players succeed it is due to their own application and not because of the coach.
