You're indulging in a bit of revisionism here. I lived through the era, nobody thought Kapil wasn't world class in ODIs.

It was easy to conflate his test performances with his ODI, but nobody doubted that Kapil was a great ODI bowler. He didn't have Imran's pace but he had more variety. He could bowl lots of cutters and swing the new ball too.
Not my memory though to be fair I only saw the early 90s Kapil and he wasn't described in such terms. But fair enough.

Do you regard him as a better ODI bowler than Imran?

I mean that would be like if someone only saw Ponting in his latter years.

Would I regard him as a better bowler? I'm not sure; it will be close, though.

The biggest reason I regard Wasim as a better ODI bowler than McGrath was that Wasim used to bowl a lot in the death overs, when the batsmen were hitting out and scoring quick runs. McGrath was better at the front end with the early overs i think. The situation with Imran and Kapil is similar. Kapil had more variety and was probably a better death bowler than Imran. Imran's pace when it wasn't swinging wasn't really a great asset at the death but Imran was better when the ball was new and hard and the batsmen were looking to play out overs. Hard to pick one of them in ODIs. It's been a long time since I saw both play.
