Is Collingwood good enough to be a regular Test batsman?

wellif he can bat like this innings more often he could challenge the likes of Key, Joyce & Shaw for middle order possibilties in the event if probably Bell or KP has a bad run..

Joyce for me...

Shah seems to be more of a OD type player from what i've seen, but apparently has improved his game in the longer version dramatically last season.

Key IMO is a better Top 3 option then in the middle order.

The other guy is Ali Cook, but like Key he is more of a top order batsmen.

Based on the current Test, yes. He showed pretty good resolve while his teammates fell around him.

Im still not sold on him.

I think hes a very good squad player, and good to play on short notice etc etc, but I dont think he should be in the first choice XI, especially batting at #4.

I think, at test level, hes a #6 or #7, and in conditions that really suit him, his bowling could be useful. Clearly conditions dont suit him in Pakistan, so having his as the first choice #4 (which he was before the first test) in Pakistan simply isnt of test standard.

i haven't seen much either but all had a fantastic domestic season this year.

Key made a fantastic 200 against the Windies last year but his technique is a bit loose; he's suspect to a lot of outside edges when driving. Personally,i like him a lot but i don't think he's cut out for international cricket.

Jocye scored more runs than anyone in this years in the county championship, along with Cook,he's England's next big prospect.

Shah was pleyed in the ODIs a while back but apart from 2 gutsy 50s against India,he didn't show much else to cement his place. Despite a fantastic season this year,he's only averaging 41 at FC level and though FC averages can be deceptive, i don't see him playing for England again.

well i spose it would be good to have collingwood................... in the sidelines as a 'backup batsman', and he can bowl a few overs aswell so thats handy.

but i wouldnt say having collingwood in the side is that significant.... ;p

I wouldn't say that his bowling is that useful an asset.

His fielding is, but he could always be in as 12th man to utilise that ;)

Its seems that most people beleive that Collingwood isn't good enough to play Test Cricket. Who do you guys beleive should replace him in the Test sqaud then. Cook, Joyce, Shah or Key...
i'll never understand the point of bringing in an opener to replace a middle order batsman. its one of joyce, shah or key for the tour of india, depending on which one of them has a better track record against spin.

I was talking more about the next series, also is Prior good enough to play as a Test specialist batsmen...
i would think the reason hes in the side is because he offers an option of being picked as a specialist batsman, otherwise going in with 2 keepers that cant keep doesnt make much sense, even if geraint has looked considerably better on this tour.

owais shah has been consistently scoring runs in domestic cricket since 2001 at good averages, anything that happened before that is rather irrelevant. and for someone with a list A average of 31 you'd think people would realise that he was never cut out to be an ODI batsman anyways, especially when you consider that he was picked to bat out of position.

can you please explain to me how someone who had a SR of 65 in ODIs and a list A average of 31 is supposed to be an ODI player?

Obviously the answer to Vaughan's poor batting as captain.

180 catches and 14 stumpings, too. Finally a keeper who can keep and contribute in another way! Move over, Geraint.

Shaw can't bat so you have to bring in Loudon and have this side:

Trescothick
Strauss
Vaughan
Bell
Pietersen
Flintoff
Loudon
Giles
Shaw+*
Hoggard (or S Jones if fit)
Harmison

12th Man (Specialist Fielder): Paul Collingwood
