Nair should be in there ahead of most of those names.

I’m ok with Arshdeep because he’s bowling well, is suited to those conditions and had a short stint in England. Not over Siraj/Shami/Bumrah/Deep of course but Harshit and Prasidh sure. Those two against bazball will be ugly.

Wait why is pottydar back into consideration
He's there for the same reason Sai is, tbh as lower tier options. I don't see anything substantially different between the two of them to say Sai is a guaranteed success and Patidar is a surefire failure.

Why are we picking Sai over Padikkal/Patidar/Shreyas/Sarfaraz again? It's not like he's done all that well in FC cricket, and I'd rather have him develop more before getting a shot. As well as Arshdeep/Harshit/Lord over better bowlers??? This is just asking for a beating tbh.
Padikkal and Patidar didn't do well in their limited opportunities tbf. Sarafraz probably won't bat any lower than 5 and concerns over his technique, I do wonder if they have moved on from Iyer in tests so probably leaves Sai.

I have mixed feelings, he has played county cricket and I think the numbers are a bit meh? Its much lower standard these days so his average of 35 isn't exactly inspiring.

I didn't actually know Nair had dominated county cricket last few years so he would be my choice , but they will go with Sai whether we like it or not.

Padikkal was alright given the circumstances, and you can't honestly tell me Patidar wasn't a little unlucky. Iyer honestly should be around the group if not just as a backup. I just don't trust picking Sai ahead of the timeline given he's not shown much at the moment. I'd understand if it was a promising pacer, but not for batting.

Gill has done nothing outside Asia post his debut series. He is averaging a mere 17.64 outside Asia with a top score of just 36 runs; an appalling record. He's been worse than both Rohit and Kohli. But they want to make him captain, defies logic. If he fails in the first 2-3 tests, he shouldn't even be in the side.

No one should be given a leadership position unless they are a guaranteed starter, hence-

Bumrah (c)
Pant (vc)

Having said that, the fact that he's been picked in the "A" team could be an indication that he might not be made captain afterall (Perhaps I'm reading too much into it)

Is Gill really that bad? At a similar point in his career (post 2014 England tour) Kohli was averaging 39.5, 50@ home, 33.2@away, 29 matches to gill's 32. Kohli also played in a much friendlier batting era (world batting averages drop in ~2016).

I get your broader point of not giving him leadership, but going "He's been **** away aside from when he dominated full strength Australian bowling on debut in Australia" to make that point is silly.

In your first series nobody knows your weaknesses yet, no homework has been done on you yet. He's been terrible overseas ever since.
