Hyped Australian bowlers in Shield cricket

Firebreaker

I can't even count how many chart topper bowlers in Shield cricket have failed in International cricket the latest one being Chadd Sayers. I remember there was a public outcry in Australia last year when Bird wasn't selected in Test and I thought he was a second coming of McGrath or Ambrose but that guy was even worse than Vinay Kumar. Similar thing happened with Sayers, who has been topping the bowling charts in Shield but was a mere disappointment in International cricket with Warne continuously criticizing him on commentary.

Sayers is not as bad as he looked in the second innings of that particular test match.
Probably he would not be picked again, but he can do reasonably well on, say, a tour to England.

Don't forget Mennie, Hastings and Copeland. Though I don't think any of them were hyped.

Australia really don't need to give pace bowlers any lengthy stint if they fail at Test level. They have a never ending supply of quality quicks to rotate into the team. Their biggest issue of the post-Mcgrath era is that very few of them are able to avoid injuries.

Wayyyyyyyyy too early to write off the Chadd entirely, especially considering he was brought in to a team in crisis, far from ideal circumstances

If Vinay Kumar had to bowl on that Melbourne pitch he's break Khan Mohammad's record for worst innings figures. It'd make any bowler look bad.

Bird and Sayers are both a couple of years past their best - Sayers averaged about 35 iirc this Shield season and didn't seem to produce the movement he did the previous seasons.

Warne criticises anyone he wishes to for any reason, even if it is complete fantasy.

That was just Stephen

Bird hasn't been that good since about 2014-15, Sayers has been falling away too, and a lot of people doubted whether he'd have much success in Tests. Not sure why you'd judge him off 1 game though

You can't really judge Bird by that one performance on the flattest MCG wicket ever.

It's hard to judge how good Bird is going at the moment. He's been gunning it at shield level when he hasn't been injured and he's been good in every opportunity he's had sans-MCG. He's behind Hazlewood/Starc/Cummins in the pecking order though. They only reason Chadd even got a go was because Bird wad injured.

I see that both Bird and Sayers have roughly the same performance at the FC level: about four wickets per match, at an average of about 25 runs per wicket. They are also roughly of the same age,
I suppose, if the two are in contention for a place, it would be: Sayers when it swings and Bird when it doesn't.

The bowlers that would more fit the description of being 'hyped' IMO would be the guys that keep getting injured like Behrendorff and Coulter-Nile, maybe Pattinson. Cummins before 2017. Bird and Sayers have just been plodding along being pretty good for years and they're respected for it.

There are many international bowlers who didnt start that well. You cant judge these bowlers on the basis of just a few games.

Ftr Dale Steyn's debut Test figures were almost identical to Chadd Sayers'

So were Glenn McGrath's actually

(I still don't think Sayers is going to be an especially good Test bowler but obviously judging someone on 1 game is pretty stupid)

I once saw Bird in an one-dayer and when fielding in the deep he was getting sledged like crazy from the fans. ''Who are you? Who are you?'' and ''Bird Bird Bird, Birdie's the word...''.

And no, before you ask, I didn't partake myself.
