Only if they are facing strongest attack in the world in Ashes. Otherwise, meh. Steve Waugh is remembered for what he did against West Indies and South Africa, not England.
who is the best batsman to tour eng bar bradman? dravid or viv or someone else?

A potential English batting lineup at least on paper looks insane:

Hobbs
Sutcliffe
Hutton
Hammond
Barrington
Root
Ames+

No, i wouldn't actually pick that top 7 but one could if they really wanted to....

I’d have Knott in place of Ames but I think I could say almost for sure that’s a top 2 top 6.

a strong wicket keeping batter would do wonders for England, hope Jamie ends with a 40-50 batting average.

I love what I see of Sutcliffe here, a bit Gavaskar esque but more graceful stance imo

Are all the four great openers defensive batsmen? Hutton and Gavaskar are but not sure about Hobbs & Sutcliffe.

Sutcliffe is the most defensive of the bunch.

SR calculated by Charlie Davis:

Gavaskar: 45
Hutton: 38
Sutcliffe: 37

Hobbs wasn't defensive though. Was attacking in youth, but overall played in a normal pace. Gavaskar necessarily isn't defensive for an opener either.

Every English opener plays slow until the recent crop, because the first and foremost duty of them is to take the shine off of the ball.

Not sure where you’ve got that.

On this page it has the exact figures for Sutcliffe (37.3) and Hutton (38.3).

On this page you can look up information on tests and series. Once you get to a series page, you can then click the “Player Careers” button, to find the info on all players in that series. (for some reason, some of those series are missing the Player Careers button)

Using that we get

Hobbs (51)
Gavaskar (45)
Hutton (38.3)
Sutcliffe (37.3)

Yeah you posted them before. I pulled those numbers as I remembered (have to say was correct for 2 and off by only 2 for Sutcliffe)
