Are all the four great openers defensive batsmen? Hutton and Gavaskar are but not sure about Hobbs & Sutcliffe.

Sutcliffe is the most defensive of the bunch.
SR calculated by Charlie Davis:
Gavaskar: 45
Hutton: 38
Sutcliffe: 37
Hobbs wasn't defensive though. Was attacking in youth, but overall played in a normal pace. Gavaskar necessarily isn't defensive for an opener either.

Every English opener plays slow until the recent crop, because the first and foremost duty of them is to take the shine off of the ball.

On this page it has the exact figures for Sutcliffe (37.3) and Hutton (38.3).
On this page you can look up information on tests and series. Once you get to a series page, you can then click the “Player Careers” button, to find the info on all players in that series. (for some reason, some of those series are missing the Player Careers button)

Yeah you posted them before. I pulled those numbers as I remembered (have to say was correct for 2 and off by only 2 for Sutcliffe)
