Most would say that Weekes, Walcott and Worrell do also run him close but thats about it.
weekes maybe, walcott and worrell, i doubt, lara is one of the greatest batsmen the game has ever seen, in my mind he has done more than enough to guarantee a place in a west indian all-time xi...

It's harsh on him, agreed. He'd be a walk-up start in every other countries all time best teams, but the Windies have been blessed with a particularly good line of middle order bats over the decades.
Would he make the Aussie all time batting lineup?

Indian batting lineup with Lara would be:

1) Gavaskar
2) Merchant
3) Dravid
4) Tendulkar
5) Lara

India have had their fair share of good batsmen, but Lara would make it.

Aussies have had Chappell and Bradman as two that I would rate higher, but really no one else, right?

How about this team?
  • Greenidge
  • Haynes
  • Lara
  • Richards
  • Lloyd (C)
  • Sobers (SLA/LM?)
  • Walcott (WK)
  • Marshall (RF)
  • Holding (RF)
  • Roberts (RF)
  • Garner (RF)
This team is set predominantly in the 70's and 80's, when they dominated world cricket, so some big names of the past may not appear. Someone mentioned Walcott as a wicketkeeper, and I had initially thought of Murray and Dujon as keepers, until that comment. The real question is how you will fit in Worrell, Weekes, Headley and Lance Gibbs.

Headley was the guy known as the "Black Bradman". The first outstanding batsman of the West Indies in the 1930s - averaged 60 in Test cricket - 37 against Australia, 71 against England... and 2 against India.

His son, Ron, went on to play for the West Indies, and grandson Dean represented England. Neither reached quite the same heights!

My team? Well, must have four seamers - from Marshall, Holding, Ambrose, Walsh and Garner. Keeper - Walcott. I'd take Greenidge and Haynes as openers, so I need four middle order bats. Lara. Sobers. Richards. Headley. You then have Lloyd pressuring Haynes and a trade-off between a second specialist opener, or more batting plus captaincy. Ouch.

anyone think they can beat my dream team of all time windies players? please post your team and we will discuss/argue the pros and cons!!!!
Hooper wouldn't get near a West Indies all-time 4th XI.

Yep, Hooper would struggle to make an all time 4th XI WI line-up.

Anyway, my preferred XI

1. G Greenidge
2. C Hunte
3. V Richards (c)
4. B Lara
5. R Kanhai
6. G Sobers
7. J Dujon (w/k)
8. M Marshall
9. L Gibbs
10. C Ambrose
11. C Walsh

Would he [Lara] make the Aussie all time batting lineup?
Yep, he'd be a certainty at 5 for me. The two opener slots and #5 are the two biggest question marks in the Aussie all time team for me, given Bradman and Chappell are 3 and 4 and Miller is at 6. There are several outstanding candidates for the openers slots and the 5 slot, but none that are clearly the standout candidate. Lara would go in at 5 ahead of Waugh, Border, Harvey, Ponting, etc for me, any day of the week.
