Ponting 156 vs england. Batted on a different pitch to everyone else. Ridiculous knock
The 156 was at Old Trafford in 2005 wasn't it? His 127 at Leeds in 1997 was excellent, but Elliott also tonned up to the best part of 200.

Elliott played well also but was struggling around when Ponting came in at 50/4 and changed the tone of the innings. Elliott even managed to offer a sitter to slip off Mike Smith, which was quite an achievement.

Haven’t seen Gooch’s one so can’t really comment.
All you need to know is that he carried his bat for 154 out of 252 against Marshall, Ambrose, Walsh, Patterson in conditions where a strong WI team was twice skittled by Pringle, Watkin, Malcolm, DeFreitas.

IMHO, Stokes' innings, for its build-up. So many different gears!
Actually, it makes me wonder why his average is not a bit higher. Then again, the way he got out in the first innings.....

The opposite of a downhill skier. Fails in easy conditions against weak opposition in unimportant games.

Yeah, was talking in general terms about great knocks re the 156.

Ben Stokes' innings is clearly ahead of Botham's from '81, which started off as a "let's have a bit of fun" slog. Whether it is the best ever Ashes innings at Headingley, or the best innings at Headingley, is open to debate.
