Yea I can’t see Hayden/Sehwag/Smith replicating Gooch’s amazing record against WI. The only issue with Gooch is overall output.

Fair enough.
He was below par against one team. Had some bad low points against them. Because of the weight of the Ashes, and Australia having the best swing bowling resources which he repeatedly struggled against, it works against him.
But due to averaging 48 v other teams in a long career of opening the batting, I think he was more consistent than his career average suggests.

Genuinely want to know what are the arguments for Hayden being ahead or it's just the case of 42 vs 50 average

I think they were better players of better bowlers.
Not sure how you judge this but Hayden had a great conversation rate from 50-->100 (over 50%) but then very rarely went on to go past the "daddy hundred" 150 mark - just 5/30 with one double and one triple.
Gooch was poorer at converting to centuries (30%) but 7/20 of his were taken past 150, with a double and a triple.
