Gooch I think. Better on tough pace-orientated wickets. Both good against spin. Gooch's struggles against swing was an issue shared by Hayden. Didn't have a cashing in issue.

Yea I can’t see Hayden/Sehwag/Smith replicating Gooch’s amazing record against WI. The only issue with Gooch is overall output.

Fair enough.

He was below par against one team. Had some bad low points against them. Because of the weight of the Ashes, and Australia having the best swing bowling resources which he repeatedly struggled against, it works against him.

But due to averaging 48 v other teams in a long career of opening the batting, I think he was more consistent than his career average suggests.
