Honestly the way I read it is that Max is almost more likely to stay now, possibly a case of Helmut Marko comitting fully to trying to keep their star driver and going along with what him and those around him would like to happen. It's well known Jos wanted Horner out and has for a while fwiw

Think if nothing else it is conclusive proof Helmut is running the show either way

Could be reading this completely wrong though

I don't think he'll stay if he has a Hamilton/Schumacher mindset. He will chase the best seat and RBR are gonna be midfield next year with the untested new engine and personnel.

If he's Villeneuve then he'll go where he's paid.

Red Bull are already effectively a mid-table team, they're only 4th because Max is somehow able to wring incredible results out of a crap car.

Next season we've got new regulations, Red Bull will have a new and untried engine, with largely untried senior management personnel. That doesn't strike me as the sort of environment that is set up for immediate success.

Fair call, if indeed Max and his management judge Red Bull as a team is a sinking ship (which for the reasons you and Furball stated, looks somewhat likely at least in the short to medium term) then nothing like that would keep him there

As for Villeneuve, I am honestly not sure any driver in F1 history has been paid such a disproportionately high amount relative to performance than him post 1997? Was getting paid MSchumacher level wages at BAR yet only barely was beating a past his prime Olivier Panis and got eaten alive by a young Jenson Button

It could be that Horner was sacked in a bid to keep Max in the seat. Or perhaps he has already told them he's leaving and Horner was sacked for it
This seems to be the thought process, Jos was trying to get him removed more than a year now.

Well Mercedes are pushing hard to get Jim, but all of his talent, there's quite a bit of downside there as well.
Not sure if I would make that move, understand why they would though.
