Don't live in denial mate @Coronis, Max is genuinely in the GOAT debate.
I’m not sure how he can be in the GOAT debate when Hamilton and Schumacher have more than twice the amount of championships that he has. I personally have it between Fangio, Hamilton and Schumacher as valid options for first. Verstappen is with Senna, Prost and Clark in the next step down. Those guys are still the big 3 for me.

The total number of championships shouldn't be the end all and be all should it now?

No. And its not. But mate, they both have 7. He has 4. All 3 of those drivers dominated F1 for extended periods of time. Whilst it might feel that way for Max, it hasn’t been that long. Hamilton and Schumacher specifically had similar stretches of dominance, plus you have Hamilton’s earlier years in McLaren and Schumacher at Benetton. Hell I even forgot Vettel. He did well more outside his 4 championships than Max has done.

Don't think anyone was performing at this level though. Winning in the best car is one thing, but consistently putting up performances like we've seen from Max over the past 2 years, where the Mclarens have been quite faster and at times the Mercs and Ferraris too, is insane. In the rain too, he's just been on another level.
The total number of championships you have depends a lot on who has the fastest car or close to that. Greatness comes not just from winning championships but consistently outperforming and stretching the limits of the car you're given.

Max and Lando turn 1 incident incoming. I can feel it, one of the two's not gonna finish in the podium places.

I hate Ocon btw but he’s been impressive recently. Just wanted to get that in pre-race. Hoping Williams can beat LeClerc too and maybe challenge a Merc. Don’t take each other out.

At least in the moments that matter the most, Piastri is more definitive and can actually go toe to toe with Max, even if you say Norris might still be just the slightly faster driver on average.
Piastri definitely the favourite imo as of now.

Up until the hard tyre stint, the commentators actually pointed out correctly that Piastri has had the pure pace advantage in both quali and races this year more often than not. Aside from Australia and that second stint, I don’t think I can remember when Lando was faster. (I have no idea about at Japan)

I still think Lando may have slightly more raw pace as a driver. I think Piastri’s racecraft is better and he’s improved a lot from last year with tyre management and understanding of the car.
