really not sure about cox. small sample size but he looked woeful against quality pace in the white ball stuff v the west indies.

I suspect Cox is only in the squad because Bethell is still in India.

The biggest concern is surely Bashir. Whilst everyone else is discussing him, it seems it's an absolute closed shop to the selectors. I feel fairly certain that whenever he does finally get dropped, that will be his final Test. He just doesn't seem Test quality and there's more talent around elsewhere. For all that Bazball has done some good things, there have been some desperately poor stuff too, and his continued selection is one of them.

I think it's fair Cox is in the mix. His move to Essex has really pushed him on. I wouldn't read too much into an inauspicious start in a different format yet. I think he should play too. You may as well debut someone in as easy a game as possible. No point picking a spinner, play the four quicks.

The only reason why Bashir's still getting a nod is because of Australia. Someone like Rehan and Leach would get destroyed here, at least in theory Bashir's well suited (at least as well suited as possible for a spinner) to bowl in Australia. Once he fails there it's game over.

In fact unless England genuinely make the 2025/26 series close (or out and out win) I think that whole series is gonna see some bloodletting. Crawley would not survive a different setup.

But what is the obsession with a tall spinner for Australia? Lyon isn't particularly tall. I'd sooner go with the bloke who can hold up an end, allow the seamers to rotate, pick up the odd one and can hold a bat. I don't think Bashir can do any of that.

I also think some players may not survive the India series first. I don't fancy Crawley's hopes against Bumrah, although he di improve for the last Ashes. But his domestic form this season has been ropey and he's already gone early this morning.

Suspect it's Potts and Cox left out of that side.

I just despair of the Bashir selection. I can almost understand the Crawley pick. Many other openers have done no better and McKinney is young/Haines needs more time etc. But Bashir is a second XI level spinner and there are at least ten better spinners in CC and he can't bat or field.

Cox is fighting for a spot in the middle order which looks very settled right now barring injuries, he is in the squad as the spare bat who can also keep considering the other ‘spare wicketkeeper’ is batting at number 3. Disappointed that McKinney isn’t playing, I saw he’s not playing today, injured?

I read today that Mark Wood thinks that overseas bowlers “fear Crawley if he’s on ”

Maybe they are frightened not to place the correct fielder in slip 2 or 3

hope Crawley scores 700 this summer and again in Australia

I expect it won’t happen

Re McKinney he was dropped by Durham today

Potts is in Durhams team after being dropped for the previous championship game

He’s gone from being talked about as being England’s next opener to being dropped by Durham, talk about crashing back down to Earth! Why was he dropped? Made two starts last week on a minefield, seems harsh on the face of it

I think it’s the old rest and rotation as Durham have went in with 3 potential spin options

Hampshire chose to use a used wicket from their last championship match

it may comeback to haunt them as Durham are 330 for 5 on day 1

I suspect McKinney will return soon enough

Who are England playing next year? Unless someone gets injured or something remarkable happens, it looks like he’ll have to wait until then to get a look-in

I wonder will McKinney be in contention for a place in the white-ball set-up one day, he’s aggressive so you’d think it should suit him, Duckett has become a key player in our white-ball sides but Crawley has only played a handful of ODIs
