England players and selection discussion thread

Played on some rank turners in the SC. Even the most part time of part timers would take wickets eventually.
I was going to say there is that.

But to defend Bashir on his CC form this season. If a spinner was taking lots of wickets in April in England it would be unusual.

Dawson, Leach and Harmer, the ones doing the best but then they are all 33+ and the age you'd expect a spinner to be more effective in unhelpful conditions.

So like to expect a 21 year old to be performing to the standards of vastly more experienced players is a bit wishful thinking from plenty.

We know that Dawson/Leach would more than likely be cannon fodder in Aus. So they've got to really just get behind some younger player to develop. Whether Bashir is that bloke we shall see.

Imagine the England setup won't be a jittery as fans over Bashir.

Its kind of telling that Somerset loaned him out to Glamorgan. Normally youd think a team would want england test team no1 spinner
playing for them, especially with tauntons rep for spinning wkts. But no they prefer to go with Leach.

Anyway assuming that Woakes and Carse will be still unfit [?and maybe Stokes as well], bash lack of form, line up for Z test might be
something like this [if tongue not injured by then]:

Crawley
Duckett
Pope
Root
Brook
?Stokes ?Bethel
Smith
Gus
Potts
Leach or a newbie
Tongue

Is Pennington injured or was he just rested in the last round of the CC?
Side strain I believe, so could be out for a bit.

Sam Cook was rested from the last game with an eye to playing Zimbabwe, I think he might be ahead of Tongue for this game.

Won't both play?
Yeah can see Tongue playing with Carse/Wood both out they'd want that someone similar and I don't think they'll play Atkinson in it either.

At a guess this will be the side with McKinney/Atkinson completing the squad.

Didn’t the Wisden podcast say Durham expect McKinney to play? I did listen to it but I can’t be bothered to go back to it lol

So I've heard just wouldn't put it past them backing Crawley again.

If you drop him and McKinney does well then the pressure on him for India will be huge.

I reckon they'd rather give him the chance for another potential confidence booster off the back of a backs to the wall half century he scored the other day

There are 2 players whose positions should be hanging by a thread (Crawley and Pope) and one who just shouldn't be getting selected (Bashir). Pope has at least started getting some runs in the CC (albeit latest effort on the flattest of surfaces at Hove) and is the safest of the 3. Performances over the next 2 weeks will maybe sort it out.

It is still very hard to judge Pope on what he does in the county championship because he actually has a very strong record there. I think his CC average is still comfortably north of 50. The other two shouldn't be in the mix, period.

There are 4 openers currently presenting pretty strong cases for selection. I can't see us going back to Sibley or Hameed, but you cannot deny their current form. Haines is probably a bit further down the rank, but if he keeps on banging in the runs, you can't keep on ignoring him. And then there's McKinney, the most natural fit for the Bazball regime, and it undoubtedly helps where he's playing his domestic cricket. But too young?

But no doubt we'll stick with the bloke averaging 30 who has 2 runs (from 3 attempts) in the first innings of a match so far this season,

I have seen rumours going around that they are going to pick McKinney because he ticks those boxes but I'll believe it when I see it. Part of me sort of hopes that Crawley gets picked and then gets taken apart by Muzarbani, who seems some bowler.

Plot twist: what if they rest Duckett? McKinney is of a similar size to Crawley, but one’s a lefty and one’s a righty (which given their backgrounds is probably a metaphor for something!), so you’ll still have a contrast there

Surely the tallest opening pair of all time if they do play together

Can't think of two 6ft 5+ openers before!

Before selected for England

Bess 16 matches 63 wickets at 22.49 (playing at Ciderabad)
Rehan 3 matches 9 wickets at 30.11 (playing Division 2)
Hartley 20 matches 40 wickets at 36.57 (picked due to being similar style of bowler to Axar Patel!)
Bashir 6 matches 10 wickets at 67.00 (playing at Ciderbad picked off a video on twitter)

Farhan Ahmed 9 matches 34 wickets at 26.00 and econ rate 2.87. His wickets including 3 Sri Lankan test batsman on debut and a 10fer against the CC Champions.

He's got 4 matches 9 wickets at 31.77 and an econ rate of 2.74 this season

Now maybe we rushed all of the four previous guys in too fast. So perhaps we should be cautious doing the same to a far younger cricketer in Farhan. But his performances so far look like he's mature beyond his years.
