England players and selection discussion thread

Nothing the ECB does when it comes to "managing players workloads" makes any sense to me.

Will rest people for no reason but then make Mark Wood keep playing ODI cricket which he's no good at. When we needed him wrapped up in cotton wool for a huge year of Test Cricket.
He could get injured playing for Essex this weekend, but he could get injured playing any game at any stage of the season, at what stage do value the match practice over the miles on the clock?

The trouble is, and I say this obviously as a big Zimbabwe and Essex fan, you will not be able to judge anyone’s ability at test level against them. The last time Zim were in England Mark Butcher and Anthony McGrath were England’s best bowlers. The Zim guys will have no idea how to play a nagging accurate swing bowler like Cook.

Who will be available to play? You have a couple of experienced Test-level bats like Ervine, Williams and Raza, but none of them played your most recent Test against Ireland

Indeed but the guy obviously should have had England honours, so if it takes Zimbabwe one off test to give him his shot, then I'm all for it.

Current England setup obsessed with pace in all formats for bowling. Whilst forgetting you need players like Cook too.

What kind of squad do you think England will pick for five tests vs us?. What would be your playing xi?

Whoever is fit at that point from a bowling perspective. Stokes still a question mark too.

Top 7 picks if Stokes is fit. Unless they turf out Crawley/Pope in favour of McKinney/Bethell.

Bowling will be between Atkinson,Woakes,Carse,Potts,Tongue and Cook and we'd assume Bashir. But he's been poor so far again this summer.

Think the only way Bashir doesn’t play is if Stokes and Woakes aren’t fit and Bethell (who I’d like to see, but I think he’s still behind Pope in the pecking order, shame he’s sitting on the bench for RCB when he could be getting valuable red-ball experience here!) comes in as a ‘specialist spinner’ to strengthen the batting, it’ll be a thankless task against an India side who have been playing spin since they left the womb…

Root should be the spinner if Stokes doesn't bowl.

McKinney or Haines
Duckett
Bethell
Root
Brook
Stokes
Smith
Atkinson
Potts
Tongue
Cook
How long is Carse out for? He'd be the first bowler on the teamsheet at the moment for me (though naturally there will be plenty of rotation)

He made 9 today. Other 27,0,5 and 155 tying to save a game
If not him then someone banging on the door. In a test like this, India wouldn't play any of their regulars. This is a change to try some new players.

Pope made sure he's the number 3 this summer anyway.

His rival for the spot carrying drinks in India and counting his money.

Is Duckett injured? Why isnt he playing for Notts? This whole idea of resting players at the start of a season seems mad.
OTOH they let gus play for surrey and bowl 32 overs on the same flat pitch at hove that Pope made his 100.

Unless bash suddenly takes a hatful for glamorgan or whichever side hes playing for next week, i dont see how they can justify
picking him over Leach or some other hopeful.

After how he bowled last night Blessing Muzarabani will be licking his lips at the thought of Crawley on a Lords green top.
