There are a lot of bowlers who can bat coming through who can do the Woakes role, but not a lot of people who can do the Stokes role so to speak, so you may be rightArchie Vaughan more likely to play before Carson I reckon.
He may not be quite so effective if batsmen can call up DRS for umpire howlers....Archie Vaughan more likely to play before Carson I reckon.
Mark Butcher said on the Wisden podcast that he's heard McKinney will play against Zimbabwe
Agree that Leach is better but they do fancy Bashir.I'd expect Leach to replace bash, better bowler, better bat, better field.
And if mr T can stay fit for the next 5 weeks. Perhaps Stokes should take up offspin.
I hope Cook gets a test at somewhere other than Lord's, if only so the trumpeter can play 'Stand by Me'!@willis_macp
Sam Cook to be rested from this week’s Championship round as his workload is managed in conjunction with England ahead of an increasingly likely Test call up for Zimbabwe. Reward for prolific county form, as Chris Woakes nurses an ankle injury
So the bowling attack v Zimbabwe Cook, Atkinson, Tongue, Stokes, Bashir ?
Is that why Tongue didn’t play against Essex? Good for Cook that England have finally discovered that you don’t have to be a 90mph bowler to be successful (not that all of our new picks under Baz have been 90mph but that’s by the by!)@willis_macp

Surely if you were short of runs and needed a bit of a confidence boost, a Test against Zimbabwe is not one you'd want to be rested from.If Cook doesn't get called up now, he never will. I don't see Wood ever playing tests again and Woakes is more or less done. I probably would choose McKinney despite my hesitation to as he is in good nick and Crawley needs some pressure.
There would be more lols if one of our first choice quicks got injured against them. I have no issue resting seamers for this game, but I'd go full strength on the batting.Imagine the lols if Cook and McKinney carry drinks against Zimbabwe
That would be a dangerous strategy, anyone can nick off early, especially against someone of the quality of Muzarabani (Ngarava isn’t as good but he did manage to get the wicket of McKinney the other day too)Surely if you were short of runs and needed a bit of a confidence boost, a Test against Zimbabwe is not one you'd want to be rested from.
There's another 2/3 rounds of CC after this one, before the Zim game. With Essex not playing next weekend, it does seem a slightly odd time to rest him, will he play again before Zimbabwe?
He's struggling to get bat on ball against second division bowlers. A Test against anyone, at Lords, in full view of the world, is the ultimate "lamb to slaughter"Surely if you were short of runs and needed a bit of a confidence boost, a Test against Zimbabwe is not one you'd want to be rested from.
Surely let him play this week, he gets a rest next week and then give him another rest closer the time? Is he going to play at all until then? There's another 2/3 rounds of CC after this one, before the Zim game.
Nothing the ECB does when it comes to "managing players workloads" makes any sense to me.Surely let him play this week, he gets a rest next week and then give him another rest closer the time? Is he going to play at all until then?
