“What is your favourite ‪#Tendulkar‬ Test century that isn’t discussed much?”

At ‪#CricVestigate‬, we will travel back to the 1st Test at Edgbaston in 1996 for his brilliant 122 (1st with MRF bat).

Why it is not discussed much?

1) India ended up losing the Test comfortably.

2) The series is more famously remembered for Ganguly (who made 131) and Dravid’s (who made 95) debuts in the 2nd Test.

The two debutants would go on to make ≈39% of the Test runs by Indians other than Tendulkar from that point onwards to the end of the 20th century.

3) England did not boast a famous bowling attack (Cork, Mullally, Lewis and Min Patel).

Unlike today, India were not considered a big series in England, hence they were given the earlier part of the summer.

Why was this a special innings?

Conditions were good for pacers; and the Eng bowlers, while not household names today, were very effective. Dominic Cork had caused WI all kinds of problems the previous summer, taking a hat-trick and dismissing batsman of the calibre of Lara and Richardson 3 times each.

Indian batting line up was short with keeper Mongia at #6, and 2 non-established Test openers, Rathour & Jadeja.

Sidhu had walked out midway of the tour due to friction with captain Azharuddin who didn't seem focused on batting. Manjrekar also got injured in the 1st inn.

India were 99 behind on 1st inn, thanks to ‪Nasser ‬Hussain’s maiden ton. In 2nd inn, SRT came in at 17-2, which soon became 36-4. On an uneven wicket SRT played his shots with confidence off the front & back foot, always in control, even when bringing his 100 up with a SIX.

The next highest score in the innings after Tendulkar’s 122 was Manjrekar’s 18. The other 9 men could only manage 65 runs in total.

The next highest scores in the match (i.e. in 1st inn) for India were also SRT's 24 & Sanjay's 23 from Top 8; though Srinath at #9 made 52.

It was the first time a visiting batsman made a Test ton in the 2nd team innings at Edgbaston since South Africa's Bob Catterall in 1924. Incidentally, all four instances before 21st century ended in the 120s.

What is your favourite 'underrated' Tendulkar knock; and why?

Twin 50s in the first Test of the 2001 series at Mumbai
155 at Bloemfontein in 2001

to name a couple. There really are way too many to pick from though.

What does 'underrated' even mean? Underrated by who?

I get that it's meant to inspire discussion becasue it means people can disagree so easily but you're not talking about the thing any more, in this case Tendulkar hundreds. You're just talking about people's perception of other people's comments, which is barely above people talking about their dreams or arbitrary food preferences.

I recall not being able to watch this entire series. Summer vacations at grandparent's place who did not have cable. Just followed on news which in those days was not internet but a 2 minute slot in the daily bulletin on national TV channel. Nice nostalgia trip.

Not sure how under-rated it is, but that Melbourne ton back in 99 was a really good one. Very handy Aus attack who were all over the Indian lineup all series, yet he still preservered.

Yeah that was a very, very good ton in a well beaten outfit.

His Sydney hundred on Warne's debut also gets a lot of wraps but the one in Perth in the same series was a far better knock in a lot less familiar conditions for him.

That Edgbaston knock in 1996 is my favorite as well. Hit a flurry of boundaries when everyone around him was falling like a pack of cards. Have a special place in my heart for solo masterpieces (by SRT or BCL or any other great batsman).

Also remember an article after the series that apart from Dravid and Ganguly's debut, India had a disappointing tour. All this **** when our best batsman had scored 400+ runs in the series.
