Cricket in 2028 Olympics

They gonna announce the cutoff date.

NZ is pissed off because they are gonna find it difficult to go past Australia in the T20 rankings.
I wonder if Australia have already had this in mind for a little while now. Might explain why they keep choosing to bowl first even after they've already won a series. They probably want a bit of a buffer in the rankings before they inevitably go get smashed in India later this year.

Yeah Australia have been smart. NZ too have gone hard. Both teams clean swept their respective series'.

The gap is only 13 points at the moment and there's a heap of T20 cricket to be played in the next 7 months in the lead up to the T20 WC. Australia also have 3 T20s in NZ in October. These could end up being crucial (twofold effect on rankings between the two)

Meh the other Asian sides have just as much right to be annoyed.
If ICC hadn't used regional rankings, they would have gone with world rankings instead.

Host + top 5
or
Host + top 4 + 1 qualifier

The other Asian sides are miles off the top 4 spots. They shouldn't be as aggrieved as NZ.

(The only reason SA have fallen is because they have been playing a 2nd string side of late).

Asia sides wouldn't have secured top spots either way, using regional rankings or world rankings. NZ on the other hand may end up top 3 or top 4, yet may not qualify at all.

I can see why NZC was pissed. Always nice to get some solidarity from the PCB at the table.

Oh, well. For all those people obsessed with "context" & "meaning", we've now got some for our T20Is in the next year or so, with us & Australia fighting for the same spot at the Olympics. It might make early October at Bay Oval somewhat worth watching.

Yeah I'd be amazed if it wasn't expanded to 8 asap if only to maximise the possibility of getting both India and Pakistan in (since they'll quickly realise just how much money there is to be made from that one game alone)

The Olympics Committees decided that they would only allow 6 teams. Maybe in the future they could allow 8 teams once they actually see the benefits of having cricket in the games.
I think cricket can only have 6 teams until it becomes a core sport, baseball in Tokyo was the same. There will be a cricket tournament in Brisbane in 2032, then after that who knows, but you can bet your bottom dollar that it'll be back again if the 2036 Olympics goes to Ahmedabad!

Rugby Sevens wasn't. It had 12 teams in 2016 and will have 12 teams in 2028. The gulf between the top dogs there, e.g., Fiji, the All Blacks, and the Blitzboks, and the rest is vast. Fiji hadn't lost a game dating back to 2016 until the final of the 2024 games.

Cricket could easily support 12 or more teams from the start as well. Get 2 representatives from Africa; 1 from Europe, e.g., Great Britain; and North America and the Caribbean, which could have 3 teams initially (with the US as the host and the islands and Canada competing for the two other places). That allocation can then go to 2 for North America and the Caribbean, with 1 more added for Europe for future games. Also, get 2 from Oceania and 4 from Asia. Bangladesh and Pakistan alone give you hundreds of millions more potential viewers.

Was rugby sevens added as a core sport from the start though?

Why does it have to be based on region? Why not just the best 8-12 teams regardless.

Tell the IOC and ICC to follow FIFA regs. Move Australia to Asia to play India, Pakistan, SL, Bangladesh, Afghanistan etc. for the Asian qualifying spot. Tim David will have to play for Singapore though.

Meanwhile NZ can play PNG, Samoa, Fiji and perhaps New Caledonia or Tahiti who might play some French cricket for the Oceania spot.
