Even with Steyn, he had few things going in favour for being a statiscal outlier between 2007-2011.

1. In 2007, McGrath retired.

2. In 2009, Murali retired.

3. Between 2011-2014, Steyn was not such an outlier.

4. Yes Steyn was a huge outlier between 2007-2010 but even that gets reduced in away conditions.

if you put a bunch of filters then sure...I guess Steyn is a Barnes esque outlier away from home.

Prior to the contrary belief, Sydney Barnes was not a Donald Bradman type outlierish figure, he was much more consostently a figure who was siimply dominant everywhere and regardless of context.

1911-12 Ashes
Sydney Barnes
: 34 wickets @ 22
Frank Foster: 32 wickets @ 21

1909 Ashes
Sydney Barnes
: 17 wickets @ 20
Colin Blythe: 18 wickets @ 13

1907-08 Ashes
Sydney Barnes
: 24 wickets @ 26
Jack Saunders: 32 wickets @ 24

1901-02 Ashes
Sydney Barnes
: 19 wickets @ 17
Monty Noble: 32 wickets @ 19

what really seprated Barnes from others was his ability to just bowl endlessly, and the fact he never regressed or was counteracted, he was simply capable of taking the pitch out of the equation and mastered all three nations, he didn't really have a Bradman esque series outside of against the saffers but he was the only bowler from the era to consistently factor in everywhere, be destructive on flat pitches, monsterous on wet or mattings and so forth, Steyn is probably a bigger outlier imho.

Unless you let a chump open the bowling instead of him.
