It was totally inappropriate but I can see why Gavaskar was pissed.

Something to also remember that that before the mid 70s revolution, cricketers did embody more of the Victorian ideal towards cricket sportsmanship.

Yes it is racist. And yes, them being Black made it much worse. And yes, Sunny made racist comments to the Aussies too. But they were to players and Border openly wrote about throwing water at poor Indian people as a funny story, so they kinda deserved it.....
