Australian Test Selection Thread 2017 - 2018

Whatever it takes!!!
But you do have him. Why not take advantage of the fact? And its not long term. Once you figure out the best combination, you can go back to that. I do think the tone needs to be set with the first game. And remember England are hardly a great batting line up themselves. So much is dependent on Root, Stokes and Bairstow.. And its anybody's guess how captaincy is gonna affect Root's batting. Sometimes its better to take the more aggressive option for the first game of a series.

All this talk about Australia carrying Wade at six and bowlers from there down are acting like last year's Hobart test never happened. Australia's batting isn't strong enough to carry 5 batsmen with Wade at six.

We are always just a TPC dismissal away from a lolapse. Fmd if it wasn't for him impersonating Bradman on the last tour of India we'd have been skittled for sub 200 scores in virtually every innings.
Think the batting now is much better than the Hobart last year with the emergence of Renshaw and Handscomb.

Renshaw-Warner-Usman-TPC--Handscomb looks solid at least for Aust conditions.

And Aust are playing Eng not SA. Don't think their bowlers would pose much issues to these batters at home conditions.

It's been said before, but four quicks are rarely gonna be better than three plus a spinner. Three plus a spinner gives you plenty to keep your quicks fresh, especially if you have someone like Cartwright or Maxwell who can send down a few cheap overs.

Gob said:
I want the quartet to happen with out Lyon compensating for that. I mean Mitch Marsh batted at six for how many tests exactly? James Pattinson can't be much worse than that. He seems a good bataman these days technically
But the point is to make your team better, not go back to what we had once and say "it'll do cos it did then". At least with Wade at 7 and Starc/Pattinson at 8/9 you have people batting in spots that their skill determines, not trying to force them up a spot to accommodate an extra bowler. And if they excel down the order with the bat, even better.

Renshaw
Warner
Khawaja
Smith
Handscomb
Cartwright (Or Maxwell but let's look to the future now. Either is fine really)
Wade + (I'd prefer someone else but Wade has won me over a bit lately)
Pattinson
Starc
Hazelwood
Lyon

I want the XI to be:

Renshaw
Warner
Khawaja
Smith (c)
Handscomb
Cartwright/Maxwell (Maxwell really should play ahead of Cartwright given he's the incumbent)
Nevill (wk)
Pattinson
Starc
Lyon
Hazlewood

Cummins extremely unlucky. Starc is probably the weakest of the quicks but offers variety the others don't. And when your weakest quick is one of the top ten bowlers in the world you know you're doing ok.

What I think we'll end up seeing is that XI minus Nevill, Lyon and Maxwell and with Wade, Cummins and Agar.

- Worked ok for 1980's West Indies, and I can't see any reason it couldn't work here
- Why couldn't Maxwell just do that job of a spinner by himself? If you have 4 quicks firing you don't need your spinner to bowl 25 overs a day and take a 5-for

This is all assuming it's not a real turning/slow wicket where are specialist spinner would be more than useful.
Just playing devils advocate.

1980's WI had appalling over rates which aren't allowed these days.

Four quicks rarely works in practice anyway unless all four quicks are amazing. Not quite convinced this four is at that level anyway.

You can find many reasons to not to play the 4 quicks but lack of amazing potential isn't one. All four are special in their own way

Starc and Hazlewood are and I think Pattinson is there too on current form. Cummins isn't far behind either.

I'd be really concerned about Smith getting banned every third match if we played four quicks. The over rate's a real sticking point.

This. Pattinson clear number 4 (I don't care how many 2nd div CC sides he's wrecked) and by picking 4 quicks, you're trading wicket-taking (and injury) potential for a proven Test wicket-taker who also happens to be able to do a job if necessary.

I love watching all four but, for now, the selectors will chooose three. Right now, correctly, Pattinson is out.

Just watching the four of them bowl, Pattinson and Haze would take the new ball in tests for mine, probably Cummins then Starc at the moment.
The four of them are all bloody talented, and there are others in shield belting on the door as well. Bird & Behrendorff for starters

Patto has proven himself on any stage way more than Cummins

You're literally talking about someone who has been hotshotted back into the test team on potential

....who then proceeded to bowl the ****ing house down and looking the best quick on either side.
