Cricketer Of The Year
Don't think he was underrated. He played for 18 years, and made use half of that. 1984 - 1993, he was an erratic batsman with brain farts of alarming frequency. Then he got his head down and did some wonderful things for 6 - 7 years. But by then his reflexes had slowed down, and ridiculous shots against express bowling was no longer there (still was ATG level with hook and pull, but he has lost the glides, late cuts and square drives). If he had got his head organized five years earlier would have averaged close to 50.

His pull shots off quicks looked so good

Especially the six off Brett Lee in the '03 WC. So epic seeing a 40 yr old handle a short ball like that

Absolute superstar. Mad Max was a pleasure to watch. He had every shot in the book and wasn't scared to play them. When you consider the context of the transformation of SL cricket, he was a huge figure. I rate him as second best SL batsman after Sangakarra.

He was also a legend in the 1990s Colombo social scene, driving around in a sports car (there weren't many back then), with a very pretty bird by his side.
