Allan Donald vs Gubby Allen

Line and Length

International Coach
Because Donald took 4 times as many wickets in only 3 times as many Tests and his average (22.25) was far superior (29.37). Not to mention that Allen played in an era of uncovered wickets that may have offered more assistance than some of the 'roads' that Donald would have bowled on.

Gubby Allen was an allrounder and quite a quick bowler. Despite refusing to bowl Bodyline he took 21 wickets in that series (Voce took 15). For those criticising his average the poor bloke had to bowl to Bradman. Larwood is one of the greatest quicks of all time yet his average was about the same as old Gubby and he (Larwood) got to bowl Bodyline.

Don't we always rate SA batsmen higher because they supposedly bat on bowler friendly wickets? Shouldn't we then rate Donald lower due to the pitches he played on?

Anyway I'm pretty sure Allen actually played in a relatively high scoring time, higher than Donalds, so not really a thing either way

Double check that with StephenZA, as IIRC that theory only applies one-way.

I accept that Donald played almost 53% of his Tests in SA. However, when I mentioned 'roads' I was referring to the Sub-continent where, in 9 Tests, he took 36 wickets at 20.33
