Alastair Cook vs VVS Laxman

Who is the greater test batsman?

Cook, probably the last of his breed (maybe Elgar but not in the same class). We're more likely to see a VVS-type than a Cook in the coming years.

Yet in terms of scoring rate, very little in it (Laxman 49 v 46 Cook). Laxman probably had more gears but was a poor converter (17 x 100, 56 x 50, would make Ian Bell squirm).

Yeah quite an anomaly but I imagine that is partly due to batting with the tail and farming the strike. Also some of the worst knees on a Test batsman since Martin Crowe. Certainly wasn't lacking in the strokeplay department.

This is a pretty good comparison, Laxman had a touch of brilliance and Cook was steadfast which is ideal for an opener.
