5th Test at The Oval, London

Let's not forget his extensive Pattinson-like injury history when he was younger.

Let's not tempt fate with Cummins

Australia have the better bowling but England have the better batting (Without Smith obviously). The thing is if England had have batted even somewhat normally in the first innings at Leeds the game wouldn't have even been close. As it was even getting dismissed for 67 didn't stop victory.
The batting has been about the same once you exclude Smith, IMO.

Just play Marsh if there's a workload concern.
Play Pattinson. He's miles ahead of Marsh with the ball and not that far behind with the bat, unless it's a road. And if it is a road we won't need Marsh's batting.

Patto average 26 with bat and 26 with ball
Marsh average 25 with bat and 43 with ball

Has Patto even gotten a fifty though? I don't care what they average at Test level, there's no way Patto's any better than a #8 at Test level.

Granted Marsh isn't any better than a #7 either....

Patto, Cummins and Starc together can form a solid batsman. Take our Lyon and play Marsh and Hazlewood too. Head, Smith and Labuschagne can bowl the spin overs.

You know Lyon has bowled like 30 odd overs a day on average and, even when he hasn't taken wickets, has gone at no more than threes max, don't you?

I love Patto as a cricketer way more than life itself, but I do think his batting is slightly overrated by some here.
just a tad.

his top score in tests is a slogged 47 and his fc average is 23 ffs. where has this "pattinson can bat 7 myth" come from, seriously

Irrespective of that, Patto is currently worth more* in a line-up than a specialist batsman who is averaging in the high 20s.

*i am basing this on the underlying theory of Wins Above Replacement value. There are at least 4 specialist batsman in the current Australian line-up who at replacement level or below.

Never get this talk about batting/bowling between teams being the same if you remove the one key player. Why would you remove the key player? He wears the team colors too doesn't he? He's a product of the same system too. Feels a bit like patting yourself on the back...if only..

tbf playing Patto would also cover for any Starc off days

so tempting

but then the lineup would be so thin

but..patto

Geraint Jones was little better at test level than Pattinson an he played at 7. Jones record v Australia was even beneath his overall record. The only times he batted lower than 7 was when Hoggard came in higher for some reason; probably nightwatchman or when England played 6 batsmen at the Oval in 2005. So Pattinson could bat at 7 but you'd need a stronger batting side than we have and atleast as good as the one England had in 2005.

Though generally speaking and in most conditions I'd have him over Marsh. This coming test being not being one of those occasions though.

I agree with this. In the case of Steve Smith he’s so head and shoulders above the rest that it gives the opposition captain an excuse.

You don't go into the fifth Test of a five Test series one game up and stack the bowling. Particularly not when only two of your batsmen are averaging above 30. I'd rather Marsh than Pattinson for this game but I'd rather a batsman than either of them, and that's coming from probably the biggest Wade sceptic on CW.

If Cummins isn't quite fit enough to play as part of a four man attack then he doesn't play this game.

If Cummins is fit he plays, if not Patto gets a game. Marnus Labuschagne a sufficient option as a fifth bowler imo. No MMarsh please

Yes, he is good but if he is there only to do a holding job, Labuschagne can do that as well. The pitches or conditions are not conducive for him to take wickets, Australia is one up and just needs a draw. So, why not play Mitch Marsh instead of him and #batdeep.
